She may very well win again this year, but if they had just held off on McDormand a few years ago, you get the feeling she would be a slam dunk this year. (Of course if Nomadland wins Best Picture, she wins there, which would make her one of the few people to win for producing and acting.)

I haven't seen Nomadland but it seems as though this would have been an easy second win for her, which means the Academy could've gone any number of other ways in 2017 including Sally Hawkins for The Shape of Water (a fine actor doing fine work in a film I didn't love but clearly the Academy did) and Saoirse Ronan (a fine actor doing the best work of her career in a film I desperately love -- and would've clearly been the best opportunity thus far to honor her).

The minute I saw the trailer for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri I thought "Frances McDormand is going to win for this." The role seemed tailor made for the anger of 2017 and it had been twenty-ish years since her last win for Fargo. Despite the strong competition, I never had much doubt. It would not have been my choice but I've generally held the performance in reasonably high regard. It felt like a good role for her that shows off her sharp wit and confidence. It was the most "Frances McDormandy" role I think she had been given.

This is a good point.

That being said, congratulations to both Chloe Zhao and Lee Isaac Chung. Two Asian nominees for Best Director. Strong day for Asian representation in that category.

I would have replaced both Sorkin and Fincher with Regina King for One Night in Miami. If six, I might go with Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, but they're already giving her an honorary award.

In fact, five of the six individual recipients of honorary awards are women, so they aren't being completely ignored.

Congratulations to Lee Isaac Chung for his directing nomination. He is the second South Korean director nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for Best Director (Bong Joon-ho wasn't nominated last year). The late Kim Ki-Duk was the first.

He is the third Asian director nominated for Best Director by the Golden Satellites them overall.

Aaron Sorkin's nomination is especially egregious considering his directing is the weakest part of the film.

Hilarious that they nominated Nicole Kidman. She should have actually sued the producers for not giving her anything to do in the film. Apart from one dismal solo number she was shockingly underused throughout in "The Prom". And even her dancing seemed as if a double performed for her during that solo moment.
