Most critics groups receive screeners, even for films that haven't released to the general public (That's how I saw Promising Young Woman this year). So, most likely they saw it either as Magilla said at festivals or via screener. I know some studios are doing the full court press with Netflix going all in on Trial of the Chicago 7 (massive coffee table book came with this year's screeners...it was a bit shameless, but Globe voters will probably love it).

The Father played Sundance last January and various other film festivals throughout the year so critics have seen it even though it has not had an official theatrical release.

I know mine (the OFCS and GALECA) are. That said, the films just have to open in 2020 on a single screen to be considered, so they could get around that, who knows. Either that or Boston wasn't paying much attention to the fact that The Father, which was supposed to open this coming weekend, moved to February.
So does that mean the Boston critics voted for The Father without watching the film? I find that hard to believe.

I think all the guilds are going to take into consideration these late openers. The studios may have given them screeners.

Which Oscar bait films come out in January and February?

BAFTA Awards will be handed out on April 11.
