Golden Globe Nominations
Re: Golden Globe Nominations
This is a pretty respectable list for the Golden Globes. There is no way that the old-fangled GGs would have nominated Alma Pöysti, for example. She would have been replaced by the equivalent of Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality.
Re: Golden Globe Nominations
I don't think it's dead for one reason: they have to go to ten. And these are industry awards. How many times did we say Women Talking is dead last year? A lot. If Best Picture didn't have to go to ten, I'd say it was out but it does have to go to ten and these are industry awards. If The Color Purple gets in for PGA and SAG, then we'll all be saying it's back.Okri wrote
a) Yeah, The Color Purple is dead. I think I was the most positive on its chances on the board, but if the organization that nominated Nine, The Greatest Showman, Into the Woods and many others couldn't find it a spot with six spots available... sheesh.
But it's not looking good.
Yeah they changed it.Okri wrote
b) I didn't think films were eligible for best foreign film AND best drama/comedy, to be honest. Was I wrong or is that a change?
Yes, but I think that's beneficiary of a field of six. Would she have gotten in over Cooper? I don't know. But any visibility is a good thing. By that token, Anatomy of a Fall getting in over American Fiction, The Holdovers, and May December is also a very big deal.Okri wrote
d) Song over Glazer/Triet is a big deal, in my mind.
My biggest observations: we've got twelve Best Picture nominees here. No idea if they saw The Iron Claw in time but we can cobble together a very respectable Best Picture lineup from this list. Lose Air and then take your pick from there. I think we should start taking May December more seriously. Sure, it missed Best Director and Screenplay but so did Air, American Fiction, and The Holdovers.
Oh, also I guess Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for Original Score isn't a total blogger fantasy.

Yes, Foreign Film AND Best Comedy or Drama is a change in the rules.Okri wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 11:01 am a) Yeah, The Color Purple is dead. c) Someone in supporting actor is going to get left off when they would've cruised to a nomination in any other year.
d) Song over Glazer/Triet is a big deal, in my mind.
I think the Oscar nominees in the top five categories can easily be gleaned from these nominations - take all six nominees for Drama and all but Air and May December from Comedy and you have them.
Similarly, take any combination from the lead acting comedies and you have them. In the supporting categories, Dafoe seems the weakest male, while any of the females could be dropped. I would take out either Blunt or Brookes, but who knows what they will actually do.

Re: Golden Globe Nominations
That's weird. I can't find it in any of the press releases I looked at, but I jotted them down from the early streaming video. They are:
Bradley Cooper - Maestro
Greta Gerwig - Barbie
Yorgos Lanthimos - Poor Things
Christopher Nolan - Oppenheimer
Martin Scorsese - Killers of the Flower Moon
Celine Song - Pat Lives
