Small Axe is being submitted by Amazon to the Emmys. It's not even eligible for the Oscars.

A few thoughts:

The critics seem to be making my argument for me, certainly in the best picture category, as everything that's been honored so far wouldn't get within a country mile of a best picture Oscar if the year were normal.

The one interesting element this year is, with critics sticking to annual deadlines and Oscar extending a long way, and with critics making such arcane choices, and with a number of seemingly more audience-friendly choices available, we might see more variance between Oscar voting and the lead-up awards than we've become accustomed to. Or...I'm kidding myself, and The Broadcast Critics will ruin everything, as usual.

Carey Mulligan continues LA's remarkable aversion to American actresses. Post 2002, when Julianne Moore won for Far from Heaven, the only American actresses to win solo from LA are Vera Farmiga in Down to the Bone, Patricia Arquette in Boyhood, and Mary Kay Place in Diane -- two in movies virtually no one saw, and one a bumped-up supporting performance. (Jennifer Lawrence did win for Silver Linings Playbook, but in a tie with Emmanuelle Riva.) It's been a great run for American actresses over much of that period, but you'd never know it to look at LA. (American men, by the way, have won the award 11 times over that same timespan, including today.)

Since I singled out GlynnTurman in my Ma Rainey comments, I'll say I'm glad to see him get recognition after so many years toiling in the vineyards.

I remain baffled people are honoring the screenplay for Never Rarely Sometimes Always (runner-up here). I didn't hate the film -- though I think the praise is over-the-top -- but the last thing I'd cite is its script.
