Re: The Official Review Thread of 2022

I could actually see Andrea Riseborough winning.

Re: Notable Firsts and Records

danfrank, while true, neither of those pairings were nominated in the same year which, I think, is what jack is asking for.

Re: Oscar Nominations

Maybe Viola was simply not a favorite of voters this year. She seemed like a filler nod all season to me anyway and I personally didn’t think she would make the finale lineup.

Re: Unseen 2022 Oscar Nominated Films

I’m hoping folks will watch To Leslie soon so we can discuss.

Re: Oscar Nominations

16 out of the 20 acting Oscar nominees are first-timers. Is that a record for the modern era at least? I think this is a really exciting stat and saved us from a lot of penciled-in filler nods this year. Also, to continue the To Leslie conversation since I think I’m one of the only people here who’...

Re: Oscar Nominations

I didn’t have time to post my predictions so you’ll just have to take my word for it: I watched To Leslie this weekend and knew that, coupled with the unusual, one week, celebrity-backed campaign, that Andrea Risebirough would get in. And she deserves it. It’s an amazing performance that reminds me ...

Re: ASC Nominees

Yay for Empire of Light I might be the only person who liked the film and it was gorgeous to look at. One of Olivia Colman’s strongest performances too.

Never count her out. The Academy loves her.

Re: Benediction

I wonder what happened with the novel adaptation he was working on that flipp had mentioned somewhere (probably when A Quiet Passion was being discussed) a few years back? I know projects often just don't get off the ground sometimes, or they get pushed off for years and years, but Davies is now in...

Re: Critics Choice Award Nominations

There are so few lone nominees for Best Supporting Actor this year (as Tee mentioned, this category went over thirty years before nominating gentlemen from the same film in this category for Billboards and now we’re discussing the possibility that two pairs from the same film could make it in) that ...

Yep, Magilla. Same page on Triangle of Sadness.

I told you guys that Dolly de Leon was going to be a contender when I saw this first. She’s already popping up in lots of places.

Re: Empire of Light reviews

Personally, I would take out Williams and put Colman in there. Unpopular opinion, but I don’t think voters are going to buy Williams as a lead and she’ll either get a supporting nod or be ignored all together. Micheal Ward definitely has a chance but it might be too quiet of a performance to get not...

Re: Empire of Light reviews

Sabin, I agree with you and think it could be a bottom of a list of ten contender. I bet it ends up on the NBR list. Original Score Cinematography Actress I do think Colman deserves a nod but folks may disagree. Her work is so strong here, especially the look on her face as her character watches Bei...

Re: Empire of Light reviews

Olivia Colman plays Hillary Small, the duty manager of an English seaside cinema in the early 1980s. The name fits. Hillary is small. The world around her has been reduced to the dilapidated theater where she works, the sexual favors she is asked to perform for her boss (Colin Firth), and the lonely...
