You forget--or maybe you didn't know, Pinsent has been a star in Canada for years, and this is the first time he has been nominated for a Genie in a very long time. I would not be surprised in the least to see him win.
And I agree about Page, AB. Juno was filmed entriely in Vancouver,Burnaby and White Rock, and could have been nominated for a Genie or two or three. Would like to have seen Michael Cera in the nominations.
For films like Eastern Promises or Water, which were filmed mostly outside Canada, I think it may have depended on cast and crew being primarily Canadian. Perhaps financing factors in as well.
I agree that it is nice to see Pinsent and Mueller-Stahl get some recognition. Danny Glover is also good in Poor Boys Game, a boxing drama.
It's unfortunate that Shark Water has not shown up anywhere else before the Genies. It is a very powerful documentary.
The creators of The Tracey Fragments (for which Ellen Page received her nomination) are kicking themselves, I'm sure, because the film was released here (for more than just a qualification run) a month or two ago. And like most English-language Canadian films it played for a week or so and vanished. With the success of Juno they could have had a decent marketing plan for TTF if it could have been delayed until after the Oscars.
Gordon will win this one. Was Eastern Promises shot in Canada? I do not know. Interesting to see the film pop up in nominations in other countries--far more than the leading US ones.
Nice to see Gordon Pinsent finally get a nomination somewhere. Too bad Michael Murphy couldn't manage a nomination, though, for his amazingly touching performance in the film. With almost no lines, he creates such a complex performance, and exudes more with just his eyes and face than most actors can do with a soliloquy. He is on my shortlist of the year.
