I don't quite understand why. After all, modern relationships are no different in same-sex relationships than they are in opposite-sex relationships.

Now, I could understand if for some reason the straight concept was a central focus of the play, but I can easily see a male-male or female-female couple being inserted without materially altering the concept or purpose of the production.

Sondheim et al have been against transforming one of the couples into a gay/lesbian partnership, for some reason.

I don't know if I've ever shared this, but if I were to stage a modern version of Company (yeah, I know they did it recently, but...) I would want to make one of the couples gay or lesbian to reflect modern relationships better than what would have been possible at the time.
