Except than O'Connell has done mediocre work in hack movies for the most part and Deakins is an incomparable artist?

Poor Deakins. Elswitt's work was very good but both of Deakins' films were superior. As soon as I saw that fiery oil spewing into the sky, I knew it was done.

He had a decent speech--not special, but not stupid--going until he decided to act like Daniel Day-Lewis had anything to do with his cinematography win.

The photography for There Will Be Blood was nothing special, but then again Elswit did deserve it 2 years ago for Good Night And God Luck, so good karma is catching up.
(His work on Michael Clayton was far superior.)

What does Roger Deakins, along with last year's nominee Emmanuel Lubeski, have to do to win an Oscar?
Elswit was deserved, but still...

as much as i love the movie, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES deserved it more. expect the coens to say something when they win best director.
