More of an anti-hero isn't he? I guess the same could be said for several of the other choices though.

A big mistake from all of us... I didn't think about old films... those I mentioned were the first that comes to mind I must say...

Lecter must be the definitive bad guy of all time. Hopkins enhanced a great scripted character, complex and charming. You fear him but at the same time we can't help watch every frame of him.

The other two (three) that come close to him in my mind are Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes) in Schindler's List and Bonnie & Clyde. The first one is hideous, hateable and extremely repulsive, but his so evil and at the same time Fiennes injected him with some kind of self assurement and elegancy that I wanted to know more about him. Bonnie & Clyde are so sympathetic characters and are played with such grace that it actually hurts when we see the end (no matter if we know it in advance).

Kevin Spacey's turn in The Usual Suspects is a personal favorite. I love undertoned performances. He's so effective. Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley is another one that comes t mind.

Some other personal favorites:
- Cruella de Vil, 101 Dalmatians
- O-Ren Ishii from Kill Bill, vol 1
- Commodus from Gladiator
- Frollo, The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Campy?
- Rebecca De Mornay, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle
- Christopher Walken, A View to a Kill
- Alicia Silverstone, The Crush
- Marc Wahlber, Fear
- Macauley Culkin, The Good Son
- Sharon Stone, Basic Instinct

So, you watch a movie, you see a bad guy, you know he's doing bad things but you so love him (her, it) nevertheless. Who's your pick? :)
