Cinematic Thaw
An Indian film will be released officially on Friday in Pakistan, having been cleared by the censor board, a first for two countries that have banned each other’s films for more than three decades, Reuters reported yesterday. The film, “Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal,” produced for 160 million rupees ($4 million), is set among London’s Asian residents and includes some Bollywood stars, who are popular in Pakistan despite the official ban on their work. The film, a football drama, is to open in seven cities in Pakistan, including Karachi and Lahore. The arrangement is anything but straightforward, however. “We got the permission because ‘Goal’ is technically a U.K. production, which was funded via a specially set up London-based banner, Aim Films," said Siddharth Roy Kapur, the chief operating officer of UTV Motion Pictures, based in Mumbai, which made the film. “The Pakistan distribution deal with Lahore-based Eveready Pictures was worked out via Dubai-based distributor, Al Mansoor Films.”
