From Daytime Confidential:

ABC confirms Carlotta recast on OLTL

A show representative has confirmed Daytime Confidential's report of Saundra Santiago being tapped to replace Patricia Mauceri in the role of Carlotta Vega on One Life to Live. OLTL was unable to discuss any details about why Mauceri was let go.

As previously reported, setside sources informed Daytime Confidential that Mauceri allegedly strongly voiced objections to an upcoming plot point in the Kish storyline that portrayed her character as gay friendly. Soap Opera Digest is also reporting that their sources have revealed the same thing we've been hearing.

As for claims made in a Soap Central article that Mauceri's dismissal was part of some elaborate plot to get rid of the actress or garner publicity for the storyline, several network moles say these claims have no merit.

"I'm sorry but that is absolutely ridiculous," says one source. "Why would ABC need to go to such lengths to get publicity for a story that people are already talking about? Patricia had a minor scene as part of a huge story, which other actresses
on the show would have killed to be part of, but she refused to play the scenes as written."

A second source says if OLTL had been having a problem with Mauceri and wanted her off the show they simply wouldn't have written the character in the storyline.

"If the show had a problem with Patricia, all they had to do was not write for her," says the source. "Recurring actors don't technically have to be fired This was simply an issue of an actress demanding changes that the show wasn't willing to make, so she was replaced."

Part 6 : Having already asked Gigi to persuade Natalie and Jared to drop the blackmail charges against him (in exchange for revealing the identity of Shane’s stem cell donor), Kyle asks Roxy to do the same, promising NOT to reveal the identity of said donor; but when Natalie and Jared DO drop the charges, Kyle finds himself trapped in his conflicting promises.

I don't believe in conspiracy theories. To me, this is pure coincidence, not an attempt to emulate the Y&R scandal; wouldn't such a blatant attempt have the possibility of backlash?

Speaking of gay men on OLTL, Tuc Watkins is most definitely one of them. I think his homosexuality is an open secret in Hollywood at this point, but just to re-charge it, my friend and his partner in NYC have had threesomes with him in the past.

This Carlotta thing doesn't seem as big as the Chris Engen controversy and, frankly, seems like some sort of failed publicity stunt. I'm not fully on board with the gaggle of people who want to crucify this actress quite yet. I need to at least hear her side of the story before I get out my pitchfork.

Meanwhile, Daytime Confidential has the following story:

SPOILER ALERT: More has come to light in regards to what allegedly drove Patricia Mauceri to demand re-writes of Carlotta's scenes as part of the "Kish" storyline on One Life to Live, resulting in the star being terminated from One Life to Live and replaced with Sopranos and Guiding Light actress Saundra Santiago. Here's what a source tells Daytime Confidential:

"Near the climax of a beat in the gay storyline where Fish decides to come out to his very religious family, he purchases a book on how to come out to your parents. Somehow this book ends up in Cristian's possession and Carlotta mistakenly believes Cristian is gay, leading to a comedic scene where Carlotta is first floored, then begins to accept "her" son's sexuality citing his sensitivity, artistic temperament and concern for his appearance. The scene was meant to be played as a comedy of mistaken identities, with Cristian continuing to insist he isn't gay. When Patricia read the script she went to the producers and demanded the scenes be re-written, or she wouldn't play them. Patricia felt Carlotta would never accept her son's "gayness". When the producers informed her the scenes would play out as is, Patricia persisted and the decision was made to recast with Saundra. Patricia has worked extensively with gays in theater and on film over the years, but her personal religious beliefs have changed. "

Twelve years ago in 1997 Mauceri starred in I Think I Do, a gay romantic comedy also starring Tuc Watkins. As Daytime Confidential broke this story over the weekend, we have not been able to seek out comment from ABC, One Life to Live, or Patricia Mauceri. We will be doing so on Monday morning. Keep checking back for further developments.

More details from SoapCentral:

Carlotta Vega abruptly recast in gay storyline controversy
Posted Sunday, June 28, 2009 1:28:20 AM
by Catherine Smith

Another gay, another holler. One Life to Live has not yet delved fully into its new gay storyline and already there's controversy. 14-year vet Patricia Mauceri was reportedly booted from the role of Carlotta Vega when she expressed concerns over her character's behavior. The role has been recast.

Patricia Mauceri, a 14-year veteran of One Life to Live, was abruptly dumped last week after she expressed concerns over the show's upcoming gay storyline and her alter ego's participation in it. The show responded by recasting the role.

"Carlotta was supposed to have a small role in the upcoming [Fish and Kyle] storyline," Daytime Confidential reports. "She objected to Carlotta's positive attitude about homosexuality, saying it conflicted with her personal beliefs."

But a source tells soapcentral.com that there's more to Mauceri's ouster than just a bit part in a gay storyline. Mauceri has reportedly been unhappy for more than a year.

"Patricia has been bitter ever since they changed the name of the Vega diner to the Bon Jour Café," the source says. "She felt like it insulted Carlotta's history with the show and even encouraged fans to write in to protest the name change."

The source explains that Mauceri does not have a personal problem with homosexuality, but rather that the actress doesn't believe that her character would respond the way she's being written.

Another source goes one step further, hinting that show execs knew that portraying Carlotta as "gay friendly" would push Mauceri's buttons. Ultimately, that may have been exactly what the show wanted.

"There was a lot of surprise among some of the [executives] by how much play the Chris Engen situation got in the press," the show snitch continues. "For a few weeks everyone was talking about The Young and the Restless. There are whispers that forcing Mauceri's hand may have been a way [for One Life to Live] to get some buzz of its own."

The buzz the source mentions involves an actor on The Young and the Restless suddenly walking out after it was revealed that his character would be involved in a same-sex romantic storyline. The actor, newcomer Chris Engen, released a statement refuting claims that he was homophobic and asserted that he left the top-rated CBS soap due to artistic differences.

With Mauceri out, soap opera vet Saundra Santiago has returned to the show to take over the role of Carlotta. Santiago previously appeared on One Life to Live in 2004 as Isobella Santi. Prior to that, Santiago enjoyed a three-year run as Guiding Light's lady mobster, Carmen Santos.

Santiago's first day at One Life to Live was Friday, June 26.

Here we go again! First it was Chris Engen storming off the set of Y&R, now an actress from OLTL is replaced after objecting to the Fish/Kyle romance; from Daytime Confidential:

This Just In: Patricia Mauceri has been reportedly fired from the recurring role of Carlotta Vega on One Life to Live allegedly due to the star's protests about Carlotta's small role in the upcoming gay storyline between Kyle (Brett Claywell) and Fish (Scott Evans), according to a setside source.

" Carlotta was supposed to have a small role in the upcoming "Kish" storyline. She objected to Carlotta's positive attitude about homosexuality, saying it conflicted with her personal beliefs."

The source goes on to say the role of Carlotta was recast with Saundra Santiago (Guiding Light, The Sopranos, and Miami Vice). Her first tape day was Friday 6/26. Santiago previously played the role of Isobella Santi on OLTL.

UPDATE: Reportedly the soap opera wanted to go against stereotype and show Carlotta as a gay friendly Latina mother. The actress allegedly vehemently protested that story decision, resulting in show brass replacing her.

----

Ironically, Ms. Mauceri apparently didn't hold these views when she appeared in the gay romantic comedy I Think I Do (1997).

If you're not watching OLTL, here's the latest episode featuring Fish and Kyle:

As it happens, Rafe was on today; also, I heard he'll be representing Noah in his attempt to emancipate himself from his parents, then next week is when Adam makes a move on Rafe.

The gay love triangle on OLTL is frankly sounding a lot more interesting than the non-existent one happening on Y&R right now. Do you think MAB will step up the story in order to compete? We haven't even SEEN Rafe since the crotch grab episode many weeks ago.

From a blog entitled "Confessions and Critiques of a Television Watcher":

As Spoiled by Nelson Branco at TV Guide Canada, Labtech turned blackmailer Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) brother to saint-turned-crazed killer Rebecca Lewis, (Jessica Kaye) will soon be revealed as Gay. In the story Kyle and Fish (Scott Evans) had a sexual past while in college.

Then Soap Opera Network leaked a script where "Griffin" (a new character) asked "Daniel" (aka Kyle) on a date and they later discussed a cop (aka Fish) who warned "Griffin" to stay away from "Daniel" (aka Kyle).

Now Nelson Branco just scooped a rumor that Griffin may actually be a recast for the role of CJ Roberts. CJ is the older child of Tina Lord and Cord Roberts. CJ has not been in Llanview since 1997 when was still a youngin. CJ was spoke of in 2003 first when Flash/Sarah returned to town and then again when Paul Cramer arrived. It seems Paul and CJ served in the war together and there was a rumor that Paul and CJ were lovers but that was dropped and Paul never mentioned CJ again. Now comes talk that CJ is coming back and will have eyes for Lab tech Kyle Lewis and even though Fish tells Kyle that what happened in college will stay there, he is not too happy about this new guy in Kyle's life.

It has also been rumored that two former As The World Turns actors, Nicholas Galbraith (ex-Zac Finn) and Agim Kaba (ex-Aaron Snyder) have tested for the role. Looks like Summer will soon be on fire in Llanview.
