A few more possible directors: John Carpenter, Werner Herzog & Mira Nair
As for actors: Annette Bening, Michelle Pfeiffer, Gong Li & Debra Winger. Or even Julie Andrews for a bit of star power even though she's won a competitive Oscar already.

Lily Tomlin would be a wonderful choice and Bette Midler would be a controversial one.

Alan Alda is more tv than the movies. Ditto Judd Hirsch - tv/stage, and Rosemary Harris is basically a stage star. Doubt either will be in the running.
