Can you comment on these people, I'm afraid I don't know who they are.dws1982 wrote:I'm glad for Tom Stern finally getting nominated, and don't think it's undeserved. A few comments...
Gran Torino peaked too late, I think. If nominations had been shifted back a week or two, I think we would've seen at least a couple of nominations. Most people are probably glad about this, but I'm not. It's a movie well-worth recognition. The good news, I guess, is that it doesn't need to rely on Oscar nominations in order to get people to see it, since it's on its way to becoming Eastwood's highest grossing film domestically.

With Winslet promoted to Lead, I'm not sure what to think of Supporting Actress. They could fall back on early-frontrunner Cruz, or go to respected thespian Davis. Amy Adams's role doesn't seem the type that usually wins (and isn't the attention getter from Doubt), but she does fit a mold that often wins here--the pretty young lady (seemingly) poised for stardom. Cruz fits that too, in a way, but if it came down solely to that (and it doesn't), I think Adams would have the edge in that respect. Henson seems like one of those carried-along-for-the-ride nominations. Don't know about Tomei.

In case anyone is looking to catch up on nominees, as I have been trying to do this morning, the following films are on DVD and available on Netflix:
The Visitor, Tropic Thunder, The Dark Knight, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, In Bruges, Wall-E, The Duchess, Wanted, Hellboy II, Iron Man, Encounters on the End of the World and Man on Wire.
Frozen River is released on Feb 10, and Changeling is released Feb 17, both in time for the ceremony.

It was a transferal error. I hadn't thought Wanted a contender, so when I saw WALL-E fourth, my mind just saw the "W" and put Wrestler down when it was indeed Wanted. And I'm not going to put a link up on my site to someone else's. That's just not how these things work. Unfortunately, I can't get access to my site from here because I can't remember my password. Otherwise, I'd have it updated to the correct mentions.

I could be wrong, but I think he meant for there to be an 'even' in that statement meaning that we had hoped it would show strong but had worries that it would be snubbed. The end results being even greater is what I think he meant.
good! i was ready for a fight. i know some people felt MILK was too conventional, but i was unaware there was a strong contingent on the board hoping it would be snubbed.
I don't think anyone was "hoping" that Milk would get snubbed (if I'm wrong, speak up). Simply, the general consensus was that it had fallen by the wayside and was in danger of losing out on key, deserved nominations, including Best Picture. The surprise Costume Design nod was lovely.

lol, believe me, I would be one of the loudest protesters if it was snubbed. I much prefer Milk to Button or Slumdog, it's not perfect, but I think it much more deserving and now with its strong showing, I hope it wins.rolotomasi99 wrote:Bog wrote:rolotomasi99 wrote:

I am also disappointed they couldn't find room for Franco in Supporting.

I was looking at OscarGuy's site, and he posted it as The Wrestler. Next time link us to the official site, Wes.

Not on the list I'm looking at.
No it's Wanted, not Wrestler that got 2 sound nominations.
Addendum -- wow you got to be fast around here.

Oscar has a very good track record at ignoring the critics' awards when they should most listen.Mister Tee wrote:As for critics -- the winner is New York, the only one of the three serious veteran groups to have its best picture choice nominated (there's also Slumdog from the old NBR). The big loser? All three, for failing to hoist Sally Hawkins aboard. First triple-winner since Bill Murray in Rushmore to be blackballed.

They are not...it is Wanted that garnered the two sound nominations.Franz Ferdinand wrote:Mister Tee wrote:Franz Ferdinand wrote:My bad, I didn't even notice The Wrestler got two sound nominations! Still doesn't change things much for Rourke, though.

Which list is that? I'm looking on the main page on this website at the nominations, I am assuming they are correct?

The official website has Wanted in those two slots. My mistake.
