The physics prize is related to the way hard disks in e.g. laptops work. "Giant Magnetoresistance" is a physical phenomenon that can be utilised in reading magnetic changes (that is, ones and zeros) from very thin layers of material (only a few atoms thick).

The Physics prize goes, 1/2 each, to Albert Fert (Universite Paris-Sud) and Peter Grunberg (Forschungszentrum Julich) "for the discovery of Giant Magnetoresistance."

The Nobel Prizes are being announced from today until next Monday. First up, the prize in Physiology Or Medicine has been awarded, 1/3 each, to Mario Capecchi (University of Utah/Howard Hughes Medical Institute), Martin Evans (Cardiff University, UK) and Oliver Smithies (University of North Carolina at Chappel Hill) "for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells."
