It is fine. It existing as a best picture contender is ludicrous, though

Kenneth Branagh broke down in tears after it premiered.

Y'know... I started to say that this should be considered the prohibitive frontrunner but then I remembered that over the past three or four years whenever we see this kind of story (coming-of-age? a remembrance?) it never goes the distance. Jojo Rabbit, Roma, Lady Bird... Belfast is probably in. For sure. It might even be the prohibitive frontrunner. But something will probably come along to take its place.

Reviews for this are dribbling in. Focus apparently didn't pre-screen it for critics, so trade reviews will appear based on when their assigned critic views it at Telluride.

Meantime, it has become something of a cause celebre among the Oscar pundit community. Last night, there was tweet after tweet proclaiming it a potential best picture winner -- nearly all those tweets from the names you see on GoldDerby's list of Oscar predictors. Not saying the legit reviews are going to be bad -- the one below is certainly respectable -- but this may be one of those movies that rises above critical enthusiasm to make a big Oscar play, a la Jo Jo Rabbit, .
