Wow. I'm astounded. I never would have thought Julianne Moore, who gave one of the decade's most brilliant performances in Far From Heaven would be removed.

I think for a year like 2002, where there are roughly equal numbers of slots in each group, there's not much point, especially in the first round. In years (like 1943) where the group 2 options greatly (or even slightly) outnumber group 1 possibilities, it is a terrific solution to the later-round blahs to ensure that there are group 1 picks available to the last.

I like the idea of limiting it to one in the first round to give everyone an opportunity to make their first picks. By the time it got around to me two categories had already been locked. I don't recall categories being locked before the conclusion of Round 1 before.

Well, it was designed to move the game along, but I can see your point...We could always try doing 1 in each for the first round, then two for the second, but I don't know if that will speed things up or leave it the way it has been.

Just to throw my two cents in...I'm not wild about giving everybody more choices in groups 2 and 3 earlier on. Maybe it's because I'm near the bottom of the list this round, but it seems like the people at the end of the round have very few options in the below-the-line categories once it gets to their turns.

1. Replace The Pianist in Best Picture with Y Tu Mamá También.

2a. Replace The Pianist in Adapted Screenplay with Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor's unforgivably snubbed script to About Schmidt.

2b. Replace The Pianist in Cinematography with Talk to Her.

3a. Replace Frida in Art Direction with Minority Report.

3b. Replace The Time Machine in Makeup with The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

In France, not in the U.S. It's eligible.

Preserve Chicago In Sound then.

P.S. Also erase Chicago from the best Costumes category. It's also replaced there.

My fault. I meant to ask Sabin if was using his rescue to replace it with Gangs of New York before I made the change, but then forget to ask the question.
