Yet, religions target kids at an early age to indoctrinate them. They want people to pray in schools. They only have a problem with it when it attacks their personal sensibilities.

PBS ombud: Sesame Street producers should have resisted 'Pox News' joke

Have the culture wars come to Sesame Street?

PBS ombudsman Michael Getler weighs in on a Sesame Street joke from an episode that ran a couple times in 2008 -- apparently without much controversy -- but recently ticked off viewers when it aired again last week.

The Times noted that Stage Right, a pseudonymous blogger on Andrew Breitbart's Big Hollywood site, called attention to the episode in question this week, as well as, issues around public funding to PBS. Big Hollywood's Adam Baldwin had a related post about the show's influence on kids.

In the episode, Oscar the Grouch is told by a viewer that she's switching from his own Grouch News Network (GNN) -- get it? -- to Pox News. "Now there's a trashy news show," he's told.

Getler believes that play on words crossed the line. He writes:

"I don't know what was in the head of the producers, but my guess is that this was one of those parodies that was too good to resist. But it should have been resisted. Broadcasters can tell parents whatever they think of Fox or any other network, but you shouldn't do it through the kids."
"What the hell?"
