Umm, what? I hardly remember him in Capote. What did he even do?
He was the one acting.

Chris Cooper played Alvin Dewey, the chief of police. He plays a much larger role in the novel than in the movie. In the novel, he really was a more central character than Capote who seemed to be moving through the story as more of an observer. The movie portrays him more as the solver of the crime, which is less true than the reality of it.

I remember him being in the movie, but you are right that his character wasn't all that memorable.

Oops! I meant to vote for the Worst of the Best. That would be Alan Arkin.
I think the best is Freeman, but I liked Robbins and also Cooper.

Strong lineup. Even the weak ones (Clooney, Arkin, Coburn) are pretty good. Chris Cooper's performance in 'Adaptation.' is so lovely, so batshit and beautiful, and such a refreshing change of pace from his neo-con dads. Every performance he gave before and after for ages was a neo-con dad. And here he is as John LaRoche just playful and wonderful. I will give Bardem, Broadbent, Freeman, Del Toro, and Caine their dues but I recall Roger Ebert's assertion that Chris Cooper gives a leading performance in a supporting role which is pretty fitting for John LaRoche. I like that.
"How's the despair?"
I almost voted for Freeman out of career achievement (and a beautiful, subtle performance) but Chris Cooper has perfectly defined character actor for years -- he's great in everything he does (in fact, HIS was the truly great performance in "Capote") and downright brilliant in "Adaptation." I'm still surprised the Academy got this one oh, so right.
