The reality, based on my read of the situation, is that the majority of the critics in this org are bloggers, many living outside of the Minneapolis metro area, and aren’t on the list for critics’ screenings. And when it became clear that any critics’ group that didn’t at least wait for the chance to see Drive My Car (which only opened here a couple Fridays ago), they pushed their scheduled announcement back from its original berth in January.

Did they think issuing a set of nominations AFTER the Oscars did would get them more attention?

It almost looks like they started with the Oscar slate and improved it around the edges -- choosing a more interesting fifth-man in lead actor, knocking out the director we wished had been deleted for Hamaguchi (and restoring Villeneuve), getting Haim in to actress (along with the better Academy surprises), keeping Negga, etc.

Tempted to start a thread called "tertiary film critics winners" for this announcement.
The Minnesota Film Critics Alliance completed the nomination process over the last week for its second annual award honors.

I had to look up WTF is The Tsugua Diaries because I’d never heard of it. Apparently it opened over here in August and had like 10 viewers…

I know precisely one person who's involved in this group -- https://mnfilmcriticalliance.wordpress.com/ -- who are giving out awards in February, none of whom are the state's last remaining in-print-for-a-major-publication movie critic. (Chris Hewitt, Minneapolis Star Tribune, for the record.) Based on what I can deduce, don't expect anything in the way of happy surprises.

It's too bad. Minnesota was one of the last remaining states that hadn't thrown a hat in this increasingly idiotic ring.

There are plenty of critics online. Matter of fact, I can think of one in particular who is in Alabama who I could imagine is probably part of such a group. That said, I can find no record of any such group existing, so I have no idea where that info is even coming from.

I genuinely don't know who would make up such a group because as long as I've been aware, I don't think that any of the papers for the biggest cities (Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile) have kept a critic on staff, and now that they are all merged under the AL.com banner, I believe AL.com just publishes reviews from AP.

I remember some pundits felt a prejudice against Netflix may have played a part in ROMA losing Best Picture. I was never fully onboard with that thinking since great movies have lost to bad movies long before streaming companies entered the Oscar race.

Has anyone read any similar opinions regarding THE POWER OF THE DOG, or has Covid changed how Hollywood and by extension the Academy members feel about the changing power dynamics among the legacy studios and the new kids on the block?
I have no doubt that anti-Netflix bias played a part in Roma losing Best Picture, but three years ago was an eternity ago and things change.

I also think it would have mattered had more voters liked Roma -- or had it played better on the small screen.

Well whoever makes up the North Dakota critics group, they just gave THE POWER OF THE DOG its 21st Best Picture win, setting a new record for a Netflix release.
I guess the Houston Film Critics Society makes it 22!
