Re: Bollywood Question

OG, I'll give my tentative answers to a couple of these questions - I'm not sure why some Indian actors have gone by only one name, but I would say that it's only "some." Plenty had both names. I wonder if it might have to do with spreading celebrity across a large country with very many d...

Re: The Tree of Life reviews

My quick two cents, having seen The Tree of Life this afternoon - I loved the film and thought it was astounding on many levels. I have some reservations, many of them already voiced or hinted at by Uri's very perceptive demurral in an earlier post. But even such reservations, against the scale of w...

Re: New Academy Rules

I would welcome any possibility to make the Oscars just a little bit more interesting, and the uncertainty of the number of nominees is one way to do this. We'll soon see whether this will benefit the blind sides vs the trees of life. I imagine that what will take a blow might be the sort of well-re...

I have not seen ANY of the first four Fast & Furious movies and there's nothing here that made me think I'm missing anything. I think I've only seen the first Fast and the Furious in the franchise but I'd go ahead and endorse it. I think it's a fairly strong action film. A lot of muscle, not mu...

The film itself is rather schizophrenic. Yeah, I just got back from Bridesmaids and this seems about right. Every good or simply refreshing instinct that the movie has - e.g., just eliding the whole "romance" aspect in the run-up to the wedding - is undermined by the tired conventionalism...

Well, I didn't really write anything about whether or not I thought it was a good movie - so it's not surprising you weren't sure whether I liked it!

Still have yet to see plenty of 2010 Stateside commercial releases (including Everyone Else , Vincere , Carlos , The Fighter , Mesrine , and Dogtooth …), but here are my ten favorites … maybe forgetting on or two … in roughly descending order Butterflies Have No Memories (Lav Diaz) The Father of My...

Ack, I apologize for having brought up that argument into this thread. Probably I should have known better - should have known that my casually mentioning it here would have reignited it. I mentioned to Damien recently that, when I first heard the news about Osama Bin Laden, I turned on the TV to w...

I just wanted to say that I was very disappointed to see the 'OBL killed' thread was closed ... first time I go on the board in weeks, and haven't seen a new commercially released film in a few months, so if I was going to post anything it'd be about that ... and the thread's down. Damn, late to th...

Anne Hathaway may have been a little more entertaining, but frankly I'd be happy to see more of James Franco's quasi-stoner downbeat absurdity at next year's Oscars. (Likelihood? Zilch.) At this point it's probably best to assume the ceremony will be bad/awkward/unwieldy and to simply aim for the b...

I've only seen a handful of BP nominees this year, but I have seen the 'favorites' ... and while I get the feeling that a Feb/March release would have surely, obviously doomed The King's Speech to Oscar obscurity (and it's not a special film), there are more offensive lapses of taste than this one ...

I think it's a bad show but I've come to appreciate the awkwardness that awards shows can provide - wish it could be cranked up a few notches. (I.e., show more James Franco.)
