The final episode, and indeed the entire season, did not disappoint. Some of my highlights from the final: -The set-up for the whole episode in which Connie Hilton essentially asks Don whether he's going to be a whiner or take charge of his destiny. Don, as every aspect of his world seems to be cru...

I could have sworn I saw Pedro Martinez make some sort of gesture to the crowd when he walked off the field for the last time, but the camera cut away and I haven't heard anyone mention it since. Am I hallucinating? He just pointed to the sky; Here's a photo of it. He also struggled (unsuccessfully...

If ever that classic line (and who originated it -- Jimmy Cannon?) were true -- "It's easy to root for the Yankees, but it's like rooting for US Steel" were true, it's this season. Hateful, hateful franchise. I can't believe so many of my lefty friends are fans of theirs. A more clear-eye...

You're right, Tee; it will be very difficult for the Cards to come back after such a punch-in-the-gut (literally: that line drive hit Matt Holliday right in his midsection) loss. In one brief moment Holliday may have lost all the good will he's gained with Cardinal fans these last couple of months....

The tie between the Tigers and Twins after 162 games, and after 9 innings in the 163rd, goes to prove that even though the baseball season is long, every play really DOES count. This is why it upsets me to see players seemingly not--as good veteran players often say-- "playing the game the rig...

I've been luckily enough to see Maggie Smith once, in Talking Heads. Needles to say she was great. Ditto. I saw her in Lettuce and Lovage in London for which she later won the Tony when the play moved to New York. A great comic performance. Me three. I saw her in The Importance of Being Earnest, I ...

Thanks for the good wishes! I've been following this board for years, though have never really posted much, only when I feel I have something to add. I suppose I would fall into the category that some on this board call a "lurker." I like to come here because I really admire the film know...

I saw Carroll and his band perform in Los Angeles shortly after the Catholic Boy album (with People Who Died) became a minor hit. I had been a fan of the album and of The Basketball Diaries, a popular book among my friends at the time. I remember there were a lot of music industry people at the con...

What amazes me about this chart is that they use $7.18 as the average ticket price for 2009. Where I live (Oakland CA), even the bargain matinees are significantly more than that, and I'm pretty sure that bargain matinee tickets don't account for the majority of tickets sold. Are ticket prices real...

Michael Jackson is (was) just a couple years older than me. I feel like I grew up with him. He was a joy to watch as a child and as a young man, so dazzling was his talent. He was very sad to watch in the last couple decades, a blend of anger, narcissism (how could he not be narcissistic, a superst...

Kris: "Heartless" - He was able to keep track of the words, but this wasn't a good performance. Are you serious? This was easily the best performance of the night, and one of the best by anybody this season. Kris has a musicality that the other two can't match, a real feel for music. I en...

This makes me sad. "Maude" was my favorite show when I was a teenager. No one shot a look of contempt better than Bea Arthur's Maude. RIP, indeed.

I agree that MacMurray is perfect for the everyman aspect of the role. I just wasn't convinced when he tried to sound like the tough guy, e.g., the way he keeps calling Stanwyck "baby." Maybe I wasn't supposed to be convinced, given that MacMurray's character is clearly in over his head w...

Double Indemnity (Billy Wilder, 1944) 8/10 This movie is entertaining as hell. Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson are terrific. Fred MacMurray isn't bad, but I kept thinking that some other actor might have given this material the extra punch to make it even more of a classic than it already i...
