Re: 2024 Governors Awards
Juliet Taylor is most known for casting the bulk of Woody Allen’s films, of course. We’ve all seen her name in that famous white font against a black background numerous times. And Woody Allen films are ones in which you actually talk about the casting. Looking through her IMDB credits list she also...
Re: Hit Man
I’m a Richard Linklater fan, and Hit Man shows evidence of his easy style that I like so much. Though there’s a good amount of plotting that involves real or fake hit men and murders, with a bunch of pop philosophy thrown in for good measure, in the end there’s no hiding that this is just a dumb rom...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2024
I wish I could tell you that Poolman (Chris Pine's writer/directorial debut) was just misunderstood at the festivals and has a lot to offer. There's a fair bit of heart in it but you won't see a more annoying movie this year. The idea of a delusional Los Angeles pool cleaner getting drawn into a my...

Re: New Developments III
Claudia Sheinbaum has just been elected President of Mexico in a landslide, becoming the first female and first Jewish Persident of that country. She has a PhD in energy engineering and is strongly opposed to neoliberal economic policies. On a map of the Western Hemisphere the U.S. is now really st...

Re: Cannes 2024
I’m trying to imagine who the target audience is for The Apprentice. Trump has slammed it so the cultists will stay away. It’s supposed to be pretty tame so I don’t imagine that anti-Trumpers would find any interest in it. I’m wondering if it’s really just Trump’s potential ire that the distributors...

I’m a bit late on this, as I was having trouble accessing this site for a few days, but just want to give a big hooray for Sean Baker’s win. I’m a fan. He tells particularly American stories that are hardly ever told, and does it in a way that nobody else does: with humor, and with a great compassio...

Re: R.I.P. Bill Walton
Nice tribute, Tee. I was a fan of Bill Walton for all the reasons you mentioned. He dared to be his own person and had so much talent that he got away with it. Almost everyone in the basketball world speaks of him with great affection, as he was apparently a very giving guy. This loss definitely mad...

Re: R.I.P. Dabney Coleman
Coleman was a character actor who was good at playing a particular type, a sort of funny-evil. He had quite a run in the early 80s with Melvin and Howard, 9 to 5, On Golden Pond, Tootsie, and War Games. Later on he had a good part in Boardwalk Empire. He was a bit over the top at times, but always h...

Re: Kinds of Kindness Reviews
Reviewers seem to be saying lots of style, questionable substance, pretty dark. Yeah, doesn’t sound like it will be an award winner but will have its audience, including me.

Re: R.I.P. Roger Corman
I remember Corman on an interview where he talked about distributing Cries And Whispers . Put it in drive-ins, in fact! This gave me a good laugh. I’m trying to imagine the audience that would see Bergman at a drive-in. I suppose those who just went to make out and didn’t care what the movie was.

Who is this madman and why would he even make such a statement in this day and age? Wonder how he would feel his home State getting nuked instead. https://www.thedailybeast.com/sen-lindsey-graham-suggests-nuking-gaza-calls-hiroshima-the-right-decision He’s just a despicable being. "Look, me shooting my dog isn't a secret. Everyone in South Dakota knows I shot my dog. It's very public knowledge." "I want people to know the truth. That dog I had? It wasn't a nice dog. It was a piece of shit. It had to die." "I would like to be Vice President. First thi...

Re: Dune, Part 2
I, of course, also prefer films with strong stories and themes I can relate to. There are certain films, though, that are just so cinematically captivating that I can overlook the story weakness and just enjoy the cinematic ride. Dune 2 fits that bill, as have other films like Mad Max: Fury Road (I ...

Re: The 2024 Tony Awards
Granted I don't follow Broadway but once upon a time one was familiar with every actor nominated in plays and musicals. In the last decade or so 80% of the actors nominated are names I've never heard. :D This year I count 14 acting nominees that are well known from films and/or television, includin...
