Re: 90th Oscars: Actor
With Oldman, Deakins and Ivory winning their first Oscars, the "overdue" veterans were well represented today.

Re: 90th Oscars: Original Screenplay
This doesn't help Three Billboards's chances, that's for sure.

Re: 90th Oscars: Adapted Screenplay
Besides Best Picture, this was the category I was most anticipating to see. I'm delighted to see Ivory win it. Never say it's too late.

Re: 90th Oscars: Documentary Feature
The only one of the nominees that I've seen.
Icarus is certainly not a great film, and this award very rarely goes to sports films, but it is topical, and the filmmaker is not merely a passive observer but an active participant in the events, so it's not surprising that it won.

Re: 90th Oscars: Supporting Actor
Glad to see Rockwell win this. He's a very lively actor who has been around for a while but who has rarely gotten good parts.

Re: Your Oscar Ballot - Best Film
I just barely managed to see all the Best Picture nominees before they start handing out the awards. I haven't seen anything else though, not even the stuff that's already available in Netflix. 1. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 2. Lady Bird 3. Call Me By Your Name 4. Phantom Thread 5. Get...

A nostalgic oral history of Oscar's greatest blunder. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/they-got-wrong-envelope-oral-history-oscars-epic-best-picture-fiasco-1087829 My favorite quote from here: I was watching live and I probably knew what had happened before anybody else — 'cause I saw the...

Re: Oscar Predictions Contest
I'll add Short Films later. There's a few other categories I haven't really thought about a lot yet, so I might change those, but here's how I'm thinking today. For once, I don't want to be the last person to add his predictions. Film: The Shape of Water Director: Guillermo Del Toro Actor: Gary Oldm...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Cinematography
They do sometimes. But not very often, and (I believe) usually only when the competition line-up doesn't have any really strong contenders to begin with.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Cinematography
I'm usually the person who doesn't think that Academy likes to give awards just because they think someone is "due", but this time, I do think they will give the award to Deakins. He's the best know cinematographer of the last decade or two; he has a ton of nominations without a win; he's ...

Re: New Developments III
It was bound to happen sooner or later, considering the stock market was ridiculously overvalued thanks to the Fed's trickle-down policies - I mean, the QA policy.

Re: DGA Nominations
I can still see Nolan winning the Oscar, though. I don't. DGA and HFPA have each nominated Nolan several times in the past, while this is his first directing nomination for the Oscars. Also, Nolan is exactly the type of star filmmaker whom the Globes love to award. If neither one of them actually a...

Re: It's Trivia Time
That is technically true, but it is my impression that, by convention, the statuette was usually considered to go to the film's producer.
