One Night in Miami...
I got a chance to see this film last night and figured that it deserved its own thread since I think it is going to be a major Oscar player. I tend not to be bothered by the "it's just a filmed play" complaint (probably the theatre major and director in me), so I won't get into that. I fou...

Re: New York Film Critics Circle
According to The Numbers website, Nomadland got an Oscar Qualifying run on 12/4 even though it's limited release will be 2/4/21. IMDb still shows it with a 12/4 release date in the U.S. It was a virtual opening through Lincoln Center. It played for a week, with very limited tickets and streaming ti...

Re: Mank reviews
DWS, I agree with everything you said, especially the cinematography -- I don't know if it was Netflix or the digital cinematography, but I thought the film looked inauthentic.

Re: Thanksgiving 2020
Thanks, Greg! Thanksgiving is one of the harder reminders we have had this year, just because it is my wife and my favorite holiday. We usually host about 40 people at our house, with all our combined families together, and a cooking party the day before with my wife's grandmothers and aunt. This ye...

Extraordinary acting all around. Kelvin Harrison Jr. was amazing in both this and Luce in the same year, has a small part in Trial of the Chicago 7 and more recently is/was filming the musical Cyrano as Christian to Peter Dinklage's Cyrano de Bergerac in the film directed by Joe Wright with Haley B...

Supposedly Amazon is mounting a campaign for, and if there is a year for an outside the box nomination, this might be it.flipp525 wrote:Could the girl from Borat actually get nominated? I thought she was great and very much stole the film.
The question might be if the film is still remembered in 4 months...

Re: List of submissions to the 93rd Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film
What are everybody’s predictions in this category? I apologize. I have my contest in a few hours and I have to make my bets  The Sophia Loren film? The Sophia Loren seems a safe bet, and is probably in contention for Best Actress nomination too. Charlatan, from Czech Republic, is by Agnesizka...

Can Biden just offer Richard Burr (and someone else with a Democratic Governor) a job in the Biden administration or something and the Democratic Governor gives us a replacement for the two or three months we need to do stuff? I believe North Carolina has a law that a Senator must be replaced with ...

Re: My first Oscar predictions!
I could easily fill out a ballot of films I've seen so far this year that are awards worthy. Maybe this will just be a chance to highlight films that don't normally get highlighted. For my edification, please show me this ballot and tell me where you saw all these movies. (For the record, I've seen...

Re: My first Oscar predictions!
I don't know about L.A., but the N.Y.F.C.C. has already declared that its cut-off will be December 31, 2020 which poses a problem if theatres do not reopen in New York before year's end. Since that doesn't seem likely, they will have to either extend their cutoff or cancel their awards for 2020 alt...

Re: Best Picture and Director 1939
These are always interesting scenarios. I always like to think about who fills in the missing nominations. Without Leigh, who is the fifth Best Actress nominee? I think there is a good chance it is Merle Oberon for Wuthering Heights, and I think there is a good chance she wins -- Magilla points out ...

Re: New Oscar Rules
Great article from Chris Feil that highlights how lightweight these changes are...last film that seems to not qualify is Braveheart.
