Re: The 2019 Honorary Oscars

Not that we should be piling on poor Wes Studi...(I fondly remember him in Mystery Men)... but, Jackie Chan is not only a world famous movie star, but he is the icon that embodies that loved movie genre of comedic action/martial arts. As I've mentioned, James Hong is much more notable if we are to h...

Re: The 2019 Honorary Oscars

In fact, James Hong would've been more recognizable than Studi.

Re: The 2019 Honorary Oscars

It should've been Ullman and von Sydow in tandem. With all due respect to Wertmuller and Studi....theirs has not been a lifetime of towering impact on world cinema.

Re: Best Picture & Director 2018

First Reformed for Best Picture. Nothing on the slate moves me.

Cuaron for his technical skills and precision as Director for Roma.

Re: Best Supporting Actress 2018

Wow. Not the most impressive in my opinion. Tavira was good but not noteworthy. Stone was very good at times, but her overall performance never seemed to gel in a way that made sense dramatically or stylistically for me. Weisz was fine, but I wasn't enthused. King, on the other way, while being back...

Re: Best Original Screenplay 2018

Not Roma in which the screenplay served mainly as background, with some scattered points of character drama. The Favourite may have had some interesting developments and some snappy dialogue...it never really comes together as a compelling piece of drama. Though, it's fun. First Reformed is the one ...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2018

Richard E. Grant. The definition of a featured actor, and a delicious and complex performance at that.

Re: Best Actress 2018

Olivia Colman because while I would classify her's as a supporting performance (she was background dressing for the fighting in the foreground), she gave the most memorable and unique insightful performance. Yalitza Aparicio was sensitively natural - but overall more presence than revealing acting. ...

Re: The Last 2018 Oscar Post: SAG/BAFTA

As this is the last discussion thread for the recent Oscars and it appears we have nothing else left to say, is this a good time to restart our game? Perhaps even an expedited run-through of the 2018 categories since we've just vetted them? Honestly, I found this year's competition dull, so personal...

Re: 91st Oscars: Ceremony

The entire effort to "bring in the 'new' and make Oscars more 'relevant'" crashed. Many of the presenters hadn't made that much of a splash onscreen yet and were unknown. Additionally, the musical numbers were mostly forgettable. Best Song, for now, can be reduced to three nominees. So, I ...
