Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

The trailer to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close starts off auspiciously. Then the second half conveys saccharine gunk. I'm not sure it's worth delaying the vote to see it. It's getting testy. From the Post's Lou Loumenick': Producer Scott Rudin and his spin doctors have given a black eye to the N...

Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

Ok. The context is important. Not critical enough of Thatcher? She's a hero in Britain. She kicked the country forward from an economic and morale dump. The country was dying in the late 70s and 80s. Not among the British entertainment and arts community, which is to the left of that in the States. ...

Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

That's why my original list of contenders is so expansive. A decent number of talked about films, but - since reviews are not yet out for many of them - hard to know how much to trust the buzz. The best I can trust to do is use personal judgment to trim the list further down to finalists: Film: The ...

Not critical enough of Thatcher? She's a hero in Britain. She kicked the country forward from an economic and morale dump. The country was dying in the late 70s and 80s. My guess is that The Descendaants will nab Best Screenplay, while The Artist takes Picture and Director. I think Kirsten Dunst has...

Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

The major British papers love Streep but find the movie "silly." From the trailer, I can't tell if she's spot-on or a tad ludicrous. Streep does provide a girlish flirty quality to her characterization that is not present in the real deal. Who are these critics performing cartwheels? All I...

Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

From buzz, trailers and viewings, here are what I consider to be the contenders next Tuesday: Film: The Artist, The Descendants (please no, the moralizing ending ruins it), War Horse, Tree of Life (please no, vastly overrated), Shame, Melancholia Director: David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tat...

Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

Would any of its components been in the running to be recognized if it were screened? I don't think I've even seen a trailer. Girl/Tattoo's trailer I have seen. Definitely a player for direction and cinematography if nothing else. Maybe actress. From my understanding, the sound mix to Extremely Loud...

Re: (Ridiculous) NY Critics Voting Date

I had heard it was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. A little less ridiculous as the date is pushed back one day to allow the membership to see War Horse on the 28th: New York Film Critics Circle Announce 2011 Twitter Handle and Voting Date Shift November 21, 2011 — The New York Film Critics Circle a...

Re: The Descendants

I think it's the story depth that affects how much we feel for the characters. We never get to know Elizabeth. In that way, we are not invested in all sides of the relationships. We also don't get to know to much about how the characters (in particular, Clooney) feel about her. The relationships are...

Re: Best Actress 1950 - Vote for the Best Actress 1950

Thanks. I was wondering if it was just me. (And, thanks for reminding me, I did like her in the Ambersons.) I have always found Anne Baxter an insincere actress. Comments? Three words: "Moses! Moses! Moses!" Only Eleanor Parker could match Anne Baxter for artificiality (although, ad...

As for the rest, how can one choose between a da Vinci and a Michelangelo? Two great, iconic performances: Davis and Swanson.

Re: Best Actress 1964

Julie Andrews is smashing and iconic as Mary Poppins. An everlasting joy. Kim Stanley. I'm disappointed that Seance on a Wet Afternoon doesn't represent her best work. She's stunning in The Goddess. I want to see as much of her acclaimed Broadway work as has been recorded. Saw a clip of her in Bus S...

Re:

Hitchcock had The 39 Steps tight and suspenseful. The inexorable energy and thrill matching the chase. I found The Lady Vanishes too slow at first and then silly. The direction not distinguishable. Hitchcock won the 1938 Best Director award from the New York Film Critics for The Lady Vanishes but th...

Re: Best Film 1957 - Best Film 1957

I find Twelve Angry Men to be contrived, manipulative, preachy and pretentious. Sidney Lumet's outstanding direction, though, helps the movie rise above its material.
