Re: Best Actor 1953

Bill Holden is one of my all-time favorite actors and Billy Wilder is one of my all-time favorite directors so I obviously enjoyed in Stalag 17 . I think Strauss's nomination was unreasonable though. I thought Holden's performance was great and I'm happy that he got an Oscar but it should have been ...

Best Actor 1992

I like all the nominees from this year. I'd probably replace Pacino with Tim Robbins in The Player though and Rea with Jack Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross . Pacino's win seemed sentimental this year. I'd much rather have seen him win for Glengarry Glen Ross but Pacino is much more a leading man than ...

Re: Best Actor 1987

I'd take Bruno Ganz in Wings of Desire over any of these five.

Best Actor 1991

This really can only go to Anthony Hopkins. There's no way it can't. He's created the one of the most significant, memorable roles in cinema history (the greatest villain according to the AFI). I could not see anyone else in the Hannibal Lecter role. The role could only be pulled off by the most int...

Re: Best Actor 1974

I'm kind of surprised nobody has mentioned Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein . That performance is usually very high when it comes to 100 Greatest Comedic Performances lists. Would anyone have nominated him? He wasn't even nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical. I don't reca...

This is one of those rare races here where only two people are receiving votes.

You're right. Great catch. I was thinking ahead. It is supposed to be for Awakenings.

Best Actor 1990

Robert De Niro was a joke, Costner was mediocre but deserved his directing win, Harris was fine but a swan song nominee. I liked Reversal of Fortune but I didn't see anything special about Irons's performance. That only leaves Depardieu who was fantastic and deserves this far more than José Ferrer d...

Best Actor 1989

All of these are pretty worthy candidates. I'd first eliminate Robin Williams. Even though I absolutely love Dead Poet's Society , it is the weakest performance here. Next, Tom Cruise. He's in yet another sentimental war-is-bad film but, unlike the terrible Coming Home , this was based on an actual ...

Re: Best Actor 1988

I'm fairly surprised to see that I'm the only person to bring up Philippe Noiret. Or are you counting that for 1990 since it was nominated at the Oscars then?

Re: Best Actor 1988

I completely forgot about Jeremy Irons! He'll take Hackman's spot in my top five.

Also, Malkovich probably would have won for me had I not seen him every time and thought to myself, "John Malkovich, what the hell are you doing in a costume drama?"

Best Actor 1988

There's really no competition here. Hanks was good in a cute role but that's about it. Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man is probably one of the most terrible Oscar decisions I can think of. I see this more as a celebration of the character than the acting. I don't have a problem with the other three nomine...
