Re: Best Actor 1998
Quick question, everyone! When I was new here I made a Best Actor 1999 poll not knowing we were going chronologically and whatnot. Should we continue on that poll or should I go ahead and create the Best Actor 2000 poll tonight?

Not necessarily, Life is Beautiful is in my top ten favorite films of all-time but McKellen's work is more intense and pitch-perfect than Benigni's only if by a slight margin.Big Magilla wrote:I suppose it comes down to whether you liked Gods and Monsters or Life Is Beautiful better.

Best Actor 1998
Here's the year we've been waiting for forever. I personally believe that this is an extremely strong lineup. First off my list is Nick Nolte. I thought Affliction was alright but James Coburn is who really caught my attention. Otherwise, Nolte just yells a lot ("This town needs me!). I've neve...

I feel that Jane Wyman would give Duke a run for her money and if Holly Hunter's character weren't voluntarily-mute in The Piano she would win.Big Magilla wrote:Among actresses, I imagine Patty Duke in The Miracle Worker would win hands down, but would the vote be for Duke or Helen Keller?

Best Actor 1997
This is a wonderful lineup. Simply spectacular. So it's hard to eliminate one right away. But I'll eliminate Matt Damon first. He was lovely and charismatic in Good Will Hunting and he definitely has a complex character but he's the weakest out of the group (which says something). I liked Dustin Hof...

Re: Best Actor 1996
I think we can summarize the board's view of handicapped performances thusly: "If it's a performance I like, it's full of nuance and textured feeling, amd you're a tasteless moron if you don't appreciate it. If it's one I don't like, it's a pathetic stunt, one of the worst choices in Academy h...

Best Actor 1996
Thornton is immediately removed for an embarrassing performance mmm... Tom Cruise wasn't anything other than Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire . Woody Harrelson was magnificent in his film but Fiennes and Rush are leagues beyond him. It comes down to the very classy, very debonair Fiennes as Count Lazslo ...

Re: Best Actor 1995
I automatically throw out a performance if I feel that I could have been nominated for the role. That being said, Nicolas Cage's talentless performance is out. I think Elisabeth Shue is who really stands out in Leaving Las Vegas . I could not agree more with the lot of you: Troisi's nomination was f...

Other than Cannes, does anyone know whether Kitty Winn had any Oscar buzz behind her for her performance in The Panic in Needle Park? And Al Pacino as well?

Re: Best Actor 1994
I believe the Academy gave the Oscar to Tom Hanks not only because he played a man with a handicap but because Forrest Gump is undoubtedly the most beloved movie character in the history of cinema. An honor of a great character not great acting. Travolta was lovely in Pulp Fiction but I agree with t...

Best Actor 1993
This is a fairly strong line-up and I'm pleased to see Laurence Fishburne get some recognition but he's the first I'll eliminate. Ike and Tina Turner are Oscar-nom-worthy roles but I feel that just about anyone could have done Fishburne's role. If you can beat Angela Bassett and yell about how you o...
