Re: Les Miserables

I just see the critics going crazy for Phoenix's performance, especially NY and LA. I feel its going to have the same impact as DDL did in 07 ironically in a PTA film.

Re: Les Miserables

Are people underestimating Phoenix's chances because of those comments he made?

Re: Les Miserables

I can't see anyone than Phoenix winning to be honest, I just think its his year. The critics are absolutely going to go for this performance, its showy, emotional, plenty of acting going. No one from Day-Lewis, Denzel, Jackman or Hawkes have gotten the type of praise Phoenix has, and despite The Mas...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2012

The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson) I only have time for a quick one, but I've long had doubts that P.T.A. is much of a thinker. Now that's set in stone. Only Punch-Drunk Love flirts with real ideas and they all stem from character. The rest of his films are a litany of homages, genuinely interests, ...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2011

I like Plummer but I never bought into this idea that he was overdue, I mean the performance most people think he deserved to win for or be nominated was The Insider, and really I thought there were many supporting performances in 99 much better than his. He's fine in Beginners, but Nolte, Sydow and...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2009

I dont think Waltz's performance is all that personally but I think its the strongest out of this group of nominees. I think Christian McKay gave the best supporting performance of the year

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2008

By the way, I suggest we follow the 2010 voting next week with Best Actress, Supporting Actress and Actor before we get to Best Supporting Actor of 2011 as that's the order in which did the acting categories. Also, it's time we voted on our next category. I think it should be Best Director. Anyone ...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 2008

I'll take Josh Brolin's complex, haunting and multi-layered work in Milk over Ledger's good but one note and slightly overpraised performance in The Dark Knight. I was thrilled the New York Film Critics awarded Brolin

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1996

Its between Macy and Norton, and both are fantastic and completely deserving of winning. Macy is lead but I think he gives the best performance of the year. His Jerry is utterly dispicable yet Macy makes him an everyman, almost a bumbling idiot who digs deeper into trouble and its hard watching him ...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1994

Agreed with you guys that it is between Jackson and Landau but the Academy got it right this year. Martin Landau’s Bela Lugosi is the far greater acting achievement and it’s one of the most deserving supporting turns to win the Oscar. The comedic and dramatic aspects of the performance he absolutely...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1992

I’ll say it once and i’ll say it again Jaye Davidson gives the most overrated performance of 1992. There are some clear inexperience’s in his performance, and the wooden ways in which he reacts to everything robs Dil of having any humanity at all, and I often wondered why Fergus would continue to pu...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1989

Denzel was a solid winner and does on the surface intensity very well but he doesn’t come close to Martin Landau’s haunting, subtle, more complex and textured performance as Judah Rosenthal in Crimes and Misdemeanours. I read a review once who perfectly described how Landau does a Jekyll and Hyde tr...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1988

Unlike Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny, Kline was incredibly deserving and did broad comedy incredibly funny and makes Otto the most memorable character in the movie and of this line up. He gets my vote here.

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1987

Im really baffled Sean Connery won, I don't think his performance was memorable at all. He should have been nominated 2 years later for Indiana Jones.

Its between Freeman and Brooks for me, both are outstanding yet Freeman is frightening, intense, and gives a true scene stealing performance
