Yeah, I like Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire. I don't have a problem with his nomination as long as others are there. My only regret is not including Kevin Costner for Tin Cup.

BTW - Chris Cooper is down for Big Night. I think his brilliant performance in Lone Star is what was cited.

Um, I was wrong. It happened. I said it. Sandra Bullock could very possibly get nominated for Best Actress. I haven't seen the movie. I probably won't see the movie. It's John Lee Hancock. He's not bad. I've read the script. I'm not impressed nor do I really care. But look at the support behind it....

Vera Farmiga is clearly supporting in Up in the Air. I really don't think much a case can be made for her getting bumped up just in the name of keeping her away from Anna Kendrick. She's very Virginia Madsen in this film. I think both Kendrick and Farmiga will be nodded.

Thanks, Damien. Needless to say, I'm all about Broadcast News in 1987. I look at the roster of possibilities that year and it's an embarrassment of riches. I don't much care for Fatal Attraction, but Hope and Glory is wonderful and The Last Emperor is amazing filmmaking. Moonstruck is quite charmin...

I usually won't vote unless I've seen at least four of the nominated performances. I haven't seen Kirkland's film nor have I seen Ironweed. I'm sure both performances are quite good. You look at the impressive number of performances left off the list and yet nobody seems to complain too terribly mu...

The Best Films of '00's The scene was not unlike 12 Angry Men (or, in this case, 3 Shlubby Men, 1 Exasperated Woman, And A Dude On Speaker Phone From Arkansas): Armed with lists of their favorite movies of the decade, the five core A.V. Club film writers spent days sequestered in a stuffy, un-air-c...

Up in the Air The reason that I think Up in the Air is going to win Best Picture is because Slumdog Millionaire last year, it has become more than the movie that it is. Very much so. It's worth noting that Jason Reitman opted for pathos instead of using those laid off as a source of humor. This was...

Just a little interesting look back of how many Best Picture nominees rank into his top ten list. 2008 - 3BPs 2007 - 3BPs 2006 - 5BPs 2005 - 5BPs 2004 - 4BPs 2003 - 4BPs 2002 - 3BPs 2001 - (should be excluded for doing a Top20) - 5BPs 2000 - 3BPs Man, if there were only FIVE Best Picture nominees t...
