Re: Last Minute WGA Predictions
Dallas Buyers club continues its surge of energy. My question would be, does this nomination simply help solidify its Best Picture chances (at this point it seems like a pretty solid bet), or will this screenplay nomination also be replicated on Oscar morning? I still feel like Inside Llewyn Davis ...

Re: Last Minute WGA Predictions
As noted by Mark Harris, this makes 3-for-3 in guilds for Dallas Buyers Club . Time to pencil it in. (And, really, hasn't every year since the slate opened beyond five featured at least one completely artistically indefensible pick? Until they go back to five nominees, there will never be such thing...

Re: PGA Nominations
As of this minute, I'd call the Oscar line-up this, in order of likelihood (I'm guessing just 8 this year):
12 Years a Slave
Gravity
American Hustle
Nebraska
Her
Captain Phillips
Inside Llewyn Davis
The Wolf of Wall Street
-------
Dallas Buyers Club
Lee Daniels' The Butler

Re: PGA Nominations
The documentary slate has an undertone of "Critics? We don't need no stinking critics" Audience? We don't need no stinking audience! Anyway, I would tend to agree with Sasha Stone (which doesn't happen altogether often these days) that Llewyn Davis is the one PGA snubbee that stands the b...

Re: As the Ballots Are Being Filled Out
Speaking as a "critic" from flyover country (well, I guess I can maybe ditch the scare quotes if someone like Rex Reed still counts as a critic), I think there should be no regional critics groups outside of NY and LA. Simple as that. It's not that I believe critics elsewhere aren't capabl...

This. No one gives a good performance, and the movie has nothing to say.Sonic Youth wrote:There's nothing to say about it.

Re: Critics Choice Nominations
Nominations for The Wolf of Wall Street that don't also include citations for DiCaprio or Hill seem, to me, a dead giveaway that some are voting sight unseen.

Re: Golden Globe Nominations
Such is the insanity (inanity?) of awards season that I'm actually rooting for an American Hustle (which I didn't like) to usurp 12 Years (which I did).
But I'd obviously rather see Her come from behind and trounce everyone.

Re: Golden Globe Nominations
True. This will be the first nomination for both McQueen and Cuaron, whereas Payne and Russell will be well-seasoned now.
Not that being rookies hurt Tom Hooper or Michel Hazanavicius any.

Re: Golden Globe Nominations
Here's one unimpressed take on American Hustle , for what it's worth. American Hustle is a film that is very engaging in parts, and full of lively performances. Also a film that is incredibly sloppy and practically incoherent and not even close, by any objective or quasi-objective standard of direct...

Re: Golden Globe Nominations
Depending on the movie's box-office performance, it looks like Thompson now moves into the center of what's now going to be our month-long debate over who Amy Adams is going to replace in best actress.
