I gave up on Lost after the first ten episodes or so of season one. The clumsy flashbacks were too distracting, and there were way too many characters hanging around in the background not really being fleshed out at all. When the makers announced they had enough story arcs to run for seven years, I...

A Chorus Line and Annie are very good calls Magilla (although I'm afraid I couldn't stand Oh What a Lovely War either). For all its faults (including the insipid Travolta and Newton-John) Grease has some bright performances and catchy numbers - the album was played by my mother and later sister man...

I thought it was a little odd that best male performance went to Gyllenhaal when the more trumpeted Ledger was ignored. How are the nominees chosen for these? Is it an open ballot with voters picking whoever they like or is there an initial longlist to choose from? Say what you like, they're fun - ...

Since when is Babe an American film? There are a number of movies on there that inspire vomiting more than anything else. Most of the expected suspects show up, although its refreshing (I guess) that The Shawshank Redemption, perhaps the most overrated good movie in the world these days, doesn't cr...

My supporting actor choice on the year was Mickey Rourke in Diner (I know, he's a joke now, but at the time he seemed a potential luminary, and I love him in the picture) Well his performance in Sin City was surprisingly strong and memorable, and he looks likely to enjoy a career as a decent unders...

I was too young to have any interest in the oscars back in the day when Gosset won his. Although I have some limited affection for An Officer and a Gentleman (its one of my old mum's favourite films) his win has always seemed inexplicable. Why did he become such an overwhelming favourite? Were they...

Magilla, I salute you for managing to find five songs worthy enough for nomination even in years such as this - but did you even consider Badly Drawn Boy's quite wonderful Something to Talk About from the About a Boy soundtrack? I think its far better than any of the songs you've nominated - partic...

1997 was an extremely strong year for Leading Actresses (amd conversely -- and surprisingly -- a weak one for Actors) I don't agree with that entirely. There were some exceptionally strong lead actor performances in 1987 - its just that the Academy didn't see fit to nominate any of them. By default...

I agree on Smith - one of her very finest performances, she's magical in Judith Hearne. I'd have given the award to Holly Hunter, but Smith would be a very close second, and looking back it's quite shocking that she was not nominated. Hunter aside, I don't really feel 1987's best actress contenders...
