Re: Best Supporting Actress 2012
Echoing what's already been said. Yes, Hathaway nailed her big number but remove that sequence and there's nothing there - the rest of her performance is entirely undistinguished, and the Oscar-winning makeup can't even succeed in making her look like she's suffering. In a weak year she did enough t...

Re: Best Actress 2012
I haven't seen The Impossible. My parents loved it. I was surprised seeing Zero Dark Thirty just how little Chastain did in the movie. Quite a long film, and she's around for most of it, but seems to spend much of her screentime standing in the background with her arms folded. She has a couple of bi...

Great speech, and this time he really deserved it.

Re: Best Director
It's just a bizarre set of winners is all. The Academy defies tradition on a number of occasions with these awards. I'm not so sure... after all the surprises in the nominees list, the evening went as expected for the most part. Ang Lee's richly-deserved win was the high-point for me, but even he w...

Re: Best Actress
So a slate of nine for best picture and all but Beasts wins something. I wanted Emmanuelle, of course, but this was inevitable.

Re: 85th Oscar Ceremony
Best opening for quite some time, I thought - Captain Kirk and the boob song shouldn't have worked but I loved them. But since - awfully uneven, bordering on dull.
I love Liam Neeson but a modern American superhero? Couple of things I don't get about that.

Re: Your Preferential Ballot
1. Life of Pi
2. Amour
...possibly my two favourite nominees since The Thin Red Line. Which makes this a pretty sensational year for me.
3. Lincoln
4. Argo
5. Zero Dark Thirty
6. Les Miserables
7. Silver Linings Playbook
8. Beasts of the Southern Wild
9.
Haven't seen Django Unchained.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actress
This is perhaps the one utterly set-in-stone big win of the night. I honestly see virtually no hope of an upset. Which is a shame - Hathaway does make a stunning impression with 'I Dreamed a Dream' but remove that song from her performance and there's nothing left which could be called remotely wort...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Director
I don't recall the last time my two favourite films of the year scored nominations here and while Ang Lee's work is marginally my favourite, had I a vote I'd probably cast it Haneke's way and contribute towards what would be truly an historic victory. It's well within the real of possibility althoug...

Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actor
I think this one deserves a few days of discussion before the big day. I honestly don't remember an acting race in many years that was quite this wide-open - one where ANY of the contenders has an argument in their favour and could potentially win it. I've only seen two of the contenders so far - Li...

Re: WGA Winners
We have an unusual state of affairs this year where four awards or more for Argo could be called something of a sweep. I'm tempted to predict it to take five - best picture, screenplay, editing, sound editing and score - with the first three looking very solid indeed. But I could certainly foresee a...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Original Song
The gorgeous 'Pi's Lullaby' would be my pick but I'm OK with the (quite likely) 'Skyfall' victory. The Les Miserables song was, along with 'Bring Him Home' and Russell Crowe's soliloquies, one of the dullest moments in the movie... a pointless addition to the score seemingly designed only to give th...

Re: 2012 Oscar Shouldabeens
I'm a long way from having a list I'm remotely happy with but Precious Doll, I love your placement of Moon Bloodgood, who will make my final list for sure with her lovely performance. It's currently Trintignant and Riva heading the list for me with Hawkes and Hunt as very honourable runners-up, but ...
