The Last Laugh (1924; F.W. Murnau) 8.5/10 An elderly doorman (Emil Jannings) at a posh hotel is demoted to bathroom attendant, an event that crushes his pride and soul. Despite some melodrama and a forced-upon-the-director tack-on ending, the film is dazzling: brilliantly directed and magnificently...

5/10 It took me awhile to get into the rhythm of the film: I was literally hating it for much of the first half before I started to enjoy it a bit, thanks mostly to Matt Damon's performance (and, yes, Bakula and Lynskey are great, too). But Soderbergh is one of my least favorite "auteur" ...

The Great Lie (1941; Edmund Goulding) 7/10

Florid melodrama with rivals Bette Davis and Mary Astor competing for the same man, and how a tragedy and a baby bring them together. Best sparks occur whenever Davis and Astor (in an Oscar-winning performance) are at each others' throats.

Good try at slipping a porn actor onto the list, but I'm afraid IMDb lists A Night at the Adonis as a 1978 film....

Having not seen The Whisperers, not particularly caring for Kate Hepburn in one of her least deserving nominations, being lukewarm about Audrey Hepburn in an ok turn and not being as big of fan of Anne Bancroft in The Graduate as others, I'm giving this to Faye Dunaway.

And for Penelope: The Vintner's Luck will be playing at TIFF. Sadly, the critics have not been kind to the film. Even more sadly, it appears that writer-director Niki Caro has jettisoned the whole gay aspect of Elizabeth Knox's novel, which is incredibly frustrating. Instead of a romance between a ...

Part 44 : Fish and Layla discuss whether he'll come out to his parents, but he might not have a choice when Cristian shows up with Fish's parents in tow. By the way, both Brett Claywell (Kyle) and Nicholas Rodriguez (Nick) have hinted that some steamy stuff might be occuring soon on the show, with ...

Bay of Angels (1963; Jacques Demy) 8/10

Jeanne Moreau is in total glamor movie star mode as a divorcée/gambling addict who hooks up with neo-phyte gambler Claude Mann. Gorgeously photographed and so very moody, but the end doesn't ring true.

I always found it amusing that Janet Suzman's 1 minute scene is over *before* her name appears in the "all-star" opening credits!

The Far Country (1954; Anthony Mann) 9/10

Magnificent western, one of many Mann made with James Stewart, this one about a loner (Stewart) driving cattle up to the Klondike. Gorgeous color cinematography, great performance (especially Stewart and Ruth Roman) and a wonderful final shot.

With the exception of Samantha Eggar (who's good, but the role isn't all that interesting--it wasn't in the book, either), these are all deserving nominees. Hartman is heartbreaking, Christie is charismatically entrancing and Signoret is exquisite. But I give it to Andrews, who takes a thin role an...
