Wasn't he also nominated for The Sea Inside?

Some have wondered if it's too early to start doing Ocar nom predictions. Well, what about Oscar wins ? I'm willing to give it a try (at least in the Acting categories) Lead Actor: Johnny Depp (is this going to be his 3rd nomination? Three times might be the charm, and the praise for his performanc...

I just think it's another example of how Tim Burton has this need to spell everything out to his audience. It's like he doesn't understand subtlety, which could be why most of his films are bombastic and rely so much on production design. I have to agree with this point. I was amazed, looking at th...

Drama: American Gangster Atonement Eastern Promises The Great Debaters Michael Clayton No Country for Old Men There Will Be Blood 7 Drama nominees??? Gee, I was thinking the same thing! Surely, American Gangster could have been omitted from the list (haven't seen too many of the others to comment o...

I just finished reading this lengthy interview with Mr. White in which he expands on that sentiment, and how. Excellent interview! Mr. White is spot on and now a new hero of mine! Favorite quote: "Nobody's painting in caves anymore... Can't go back there. But you've got paper and pencil. If yo...

Great assessment, Mister Tee. I just saw NCFOM today and I'm still processing, but what you've written just gave me a whole new perspective on what the ending was all about. I have a feeling I'm going to give this a second viewing. For whatever reason, though, to me this felt more like David Lynch ...

To be fair, I could see this history of black pop working onstage, as a sort of cabaret. But unless the movie intends to go all out camp, I need a little more nutrition. I so wished Bill Condon had pushed for a campy version of Dreamgirls. It definitely would've made some of the really mediocre tun...

OK, so we've got examples like Shortbus and Brown Bunny. Still, is it really hard to believe a sex scene can be simulated to look real in a movie, the way killings might look real in a movie?

The movie theater was packed when I went to see it earlier today, so I expect it to do well at the box office this weekend. The two leads did not disappoint, and it was great having Denzel and Russell in a movie together. But somehow I found Ridley Scott's direction to be a bit uneven. His leads we...

Asking if the sex is real in a non-hardcore film (when it's not promoted as real as was in Shortbus) is like asking if the killing is real in a graphically violent movie. Surely, if ketchup can be used to create "real" murder scenes, we can imagine all kinds of fabrications to make "...

Now that I'm thinking about it, I guess NC-17 makes sense due to its "adult" content. If the ratings system has children in mind, then a film like "Lust, Caution" is a thoroughly grown-up move that the young ones probably couldn't process, whereas blood-and-guts movies like Host...

Tang Wei is wonderful and should be nominated for Best Actress. Tony Leung is quite good as well, though not at heartbreaking as in 'In the Mood for Love', but as stately and commanding as always. It should garner nominations all across the board, just nothing above the line. The film is so powerfu...

Actually, I thought Marion Cotillard was the film's only saving grace. If it were not for her, this would've been another Ray biopic (I was not all that impressed with Jamie Foxx). But the storyline was one hot mess! I wish we had gotten more of Edith's life as a young woman on the streets, I wish ...
