Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Actress
But are you talking about the BFCA or BAFTA? Bc Gladstone was nominated for the former (lost to Stone), but not the latter. If you're saying Lily Gladstone missed out on a BAFTA nomination due to category confusion, well, why couldn't she get nominated over Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple) or Vi...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Actress
The 80s, though, offered a turnaround; breakout women nearly every year. And, basically, none of them ever managed to win with AMPAS (the way the entire male cohort that preceded them had -- though it took hoo-ah Pacino all the way to the 90s to do it). If you had told me, around 1990, that we'd be...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Actress
Well, I'm not going to be a weenie and I am going to comment on the race. I think it's going to be Emma Stone. I posted something to this effect in another thread but I'll be brief. I just think for Emma Stone to not be considered the favorite going into Oscar night, she'd have to start to get real...

Categories One-by-One: Best Actress
I think this is a four-way race. Whether I’m right or wrong, it’s rather fun to think in those terms. What I would give to replace Bening with someone else. It doesn’t have to be Robbie. It could be Greta Lee. It could be Virginie Efira (masterful in Other People’s Children). Teyana Taylor was singl...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actress
Is it a weak category? I think so. We talk about the bloggers setting the tone for the race by predicting according to specific dictums and just sticking to it. Sometimes it’s the role itself. Sometimes it’s the pedigree of the performer. Sometimes it’s just predicting people from the big film. I th...

Yeah, I've youtubed the Tracy Chapman/Luke Combs performance a few times now.

Re: 2023 Grammy Awards
I think that the Taylor Swift "backlash" as it currently exists is being promulgated by the MAGA right certainly prevents her from being dethroned any time soon. As someone who has yet to hear a full Swift song (I think), I'm basically fine with it - I find her and her fans fascinating.

Re: I'm always here for the Trivia
I don't believe Scorsese was a producer of Taxi Driver and AMPAS staggeringly overlooked him in 1976.

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
The gender make up of the directing branch (91% male in 2012, though no doubt its better now) AND the fact that Barbie is ultra-feminine (so much pink) shouldn't be dismissed as contributors to the omission there.

So Hilary Clinton tweeted about Gerwig/Robbie missing nominations.

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
I think best actress is as close to a jump ball as we will get, but Bening winning for Nyad would be like Glenn Close winning for Albert Nobbs. I think she's squarely 5th. I also think there's something weird about how AMPAS has responded to that coterie of actresses that came to prominence in the 8...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
I think we all had the sense after BAFTA that nothing was really cleared up. No kidding! SAG forecast 17 of the eventual 20 acting nominees which is the most overlap between Oscar & SAG since 2016. If we just exclude the extra nominee in each BAFTA category, there's only 13/20 overlap. That's a...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
More thoughts to come, but the level of applause for Diane Warren floored me. I'm petty enough wish-cast it as ironic, though More thoughts and shout outs A. Sabin's early thoughts that Past Lives wouldn't get anything outside of picture/screenplay B. Tee on Gerwig. AMPAS going for Triet as opposed ...

Re: I'm always here for the Trivia
Not true trivia, but two members of Tee's game (near misses and discussed performers) got nominated this year, Blunt (2006) and Wright (2021).
