When I was a young lad, Ben-Hur and The Diary of Anne Frank were favorites; today, Ben-Hur barely holds up, with Stephen Boyd's still-marvelous portrayal of Messala and the still-thrilling chariot race to recommend it; Diary of Anne Frank has some gripping movements, but goes on and on and on.... I've read both the original source novels for Anatomy of a Murder and The Nun's Story and find both film versions to be disappointments.
My vote goes to Room at the Top, a classy, smart melodrama with spectacularly great performances.
