A director can have a brilliant success and fuck up everything they touch after. It happens all the time. Look at what George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola did. Even Sofia Coppola has struggled to live up to the expectations following Lost in Translation. It doesn't mean their prior work was crap, just that they can't replicate it.

I'm not going to waste the space here, but you should check around the web for some of the Razzie-level reviews being handed out to Grace of Monaco. Maybe those of us who didn't swoon for Dahan's La Vie en Rose were on to something.
