I think it's going to be a non-exciting year. I'm only somewhat conflicted about 5 categories. Done with the rest. I've already filled out my ballots on Gold Derby, the NYT and the Oscars website.

So when do we start the Oscar winners prediction game? I've made my choices.

Last night I was going to post something further on this thread but I got the dreaded 403 error and couldn't so I will do it now.

Though I included Force Majeure in my foreign language line-up I had grave doubts of it making the final five and to be honest I only included it because I had no idea which of the other four to select so I went for the 5 most prolific of the 9.

My selections in relation to Mr. Turner (Picture, Director, Actor) were more wishfully thinking and hoping against hope.

Ditto Renee Russo.

Dark horse, yes, but he could start popping up on revised lists. The film was only shown the other night. Check out Awards Daily or In Contention for reactions.

Big Magilla, I haven't seen Chris Pine on any predictions lists (indieWire, Awards Daily, etc.) so far so what exactly would you call him? Nor has he really been mentioned around here. Maybe "surprise" is the wrong word. Dark horse, perhaps? Whenever someone is cited from "Into the Woods" it's been Johnny Depp (who, from what I've heard, just does a variation on his Willy Wonka performance).

Pine is not even listed in Awards Daily's 44-deep list of "Most Likely Supporting Actor Nominees."

At this point Chris Pine wouldn't be a surprise. He and Anna Kendrick have gotten the best early word of anyone aside from Meryl Streep. The campaign to promote Emily Blunt to lead seems to have misfired. Disney would be better off promoting Streep in that category, where she belongs.

Over the weekend, I spoke to someone who had attended an advanced screening of "Into the Woods" and she said that Chris Pine's charismatic performance as Cinderella's Prince practically stole the whole movie. Might he be able to sneak into this weak Best Supporting Actor slate as a surprise nominee?

I think at some point maybe a documentary will be nominated in Best Picture. I highly doubt that one will be.

My revised predictions submitted to, but not yet published, at Cinemasight agree with all five of your director predictions and 19 of your 20 acting predictions but only 8 of your 10 Best Picture predictions.

If I'm not mistaken it started out as a Coen Brothers movie, but they either didn't want to do it or it didn't fit into their schedule. I suspect they originally worked on the script but it was fleshed out by Nicholson and doctored by La Gravenese.
