Chavez being a military guy knew how to keep the reins of the country and resist the worst populist impulses of his party.
Maduro OTOH is an obviously unqualified guy who was thrust into the limelight and is just in over his head. I believe that if the former was still alive and governing, Venezuela would be in a much better shape.

Perhaps Anonymous was only anticipating what things were going to be like with Maduro.

HarryGoldfarb, I wonder if you are aware of governments in South American countries other than where you live. Specifically, I have read that Lula da Silva, and now Rousseff, in Brazil have not had corruption problems and have been strong examples of successful left-wing governments.

He was an awful man. And of course, as is typical of corrupt politicians everywhere, he preached one thing while he privately amassed a huge personal fortune.

As I have said... It is pretty hard to explain the situation in Venezuela. For some group, this is old news, just a delayed confirmation. But we can not deny the man was loved by the majority of Venezuelans. Chávez was a product of old bad public policies, he used people's ignorance to nurture ideas of equality and for the very first time a lot of them, who had been socially excluded, had a hope (and eventually a refrigerator and in some cases even a free apartment!). But yes, the man was brutally agressive and offensive to his adversaries, he increased our international debt to its worst peak ever, killed our currencies, mistreated local doctors and did little to improve our health system. He was a plague to prívate property and above all, a leader passionately followed by half of the country who created a profound division among Venezuelans. This is unbelievable: we live in a country divided in "Chavistas" and "Opositores", enemies by default. Just for that, I won't miss him. I can not be happy for his (or anybody's) death, but certainly I'm not among the suffering half of the country at this weird hour. I just hope his death open the doors to a better future but I am not specially optimistic. His ideas of "revolution" and "deffense of the homeland" are deeply rooted in general population and now we have a VP, previously a bus driver, and the President of the National Assembly disputing the interin predidency... This is a chaos. Thankfully, everything is pretty quiet so far...

Venezuelan socialist dictator Hugo Chavez is dead according to reports. Not gonna say R.I.P.. because the man was a scumbag.
