Re: Winner predictions
I look at these predictions and I have to ask: why is everyone saying it's such an exciting year? Most of the predictions below are nearly identical with a handful of differences here and there in the big categories, but few...I'd say it looks quite predictable if most people tend to agree who the leaders in the races are.

Re: Winner predictions
I wouldn't have thought Daniel Day-Lewis would win over Jean-Louis Trintignant and John Hawkes, but considering the actual competition, a third Oscar is well within his grasp.
Tommy Lee Jones has Best Supporting Actor in the bag.

Re: Winner predictions
I've decided Tommy Lee Jones is my designated Oscar hopeful. If he can play "the esteemed gentleman from Pennsylvania" and make me believe it, he deserves an award for that. Tommy Lee Jones... Pennsylvania... I'd never have thought it possible...
And yes, I believe they'd give Day-Lewis an Oscar for playing Abraham Lincoln over Bradley Cooper and Joaquin Phoenix in a second. And technicalities like this being his third Oscar ain't gonna make them think twice.

Re: Winner predictions
Can't see any reason why Jones and Day-Lewis won't both win. The fact that Spielberg has never directed an Oscar winning performance is not a meaningful. I also don't think Oscar voters sit around and think about how many Oscars someone has while filling out their ballot.

Re: Winner predictions
Do we really think that Daniel Day-Lewis is going to win another Oscar so soon after winning for There Will Be Blood? I mean, he's a great actor and all, but seeing how long it took for the Academy to finally give Meryl Streep her third Oscar, I could see it taking a similar length of time for them to feel like awarding Daniel Day-Lewis his third. I could easily see them giving it to Bradley Cooper or Joaquin Phoenix instead. The only thing I see in his favor is the distinction of playing arguably the most popular U.S. President ever in a film now perceived to be the frontrunner. That it's also a huge hit at the box-office doesn't hurt either.
It should also be noted that Steven Spielberg has never directed an actor to an Oscar win. I can't see both Daniel Day-Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones winning what would be their third and second Oscars in a Spielberg-directed film.

Re: Winner predictions
Robert De Niro isn't winning a third, at least not for something like this.
Christoph Waltz doesn't have a two-time Oscar winner vibe, nor does Alan Arkin (and Arkin's performance is too slight and similar to his prior win to be considered much of a competitor).
The only two on this list I can see them giving a second Oscar two are Tommy Lee Jones (who unlike Bacall is fairly well liked person) and Philip Seymour Hoffman. I think Jones has the edge simply because he's been an ever-present personality the last few years and his character seems like something Academy voters would love to recognize.

Re: Winner predictions
Ah but in a field of past winners, favoritism could play a role and present a "surprise" winner. Remember Lauren Bacall?MovieFan wrote:I think Tommy Lee Jones is easily winning Supporting Actor.
