Could the Best Picture pedigree of Hugo help it win as the last three winners have all been Best Picture nominees, could the pros help propel Rise of the Planet of the Apes into a win despite this category being its only nomination (a feat accomplished only recently by The Golden Compass and before that Death Becomes Her) or could Harry Potter be thrown a bone for it being the last in the series, as it was the case with the BAFTAs? These three movies all have something strong going for it, but I'm not sure which way it will go. Honestly, this is probably my favorite category this year to watch if only because of this.

Just a quick correction, The Golden Compass also received a nomination for its Art Direction, yet lost to Sweeney Todd.

For my money Rise of the Planet of the Apes had the most stunning visusal effects and is the most likely winner in my estimation, but they could also throw a bone to Harry Potter, either of which would make Hugo the first Best Picture nominee in this category to lose to a non-nominee since Patton.

I don't think Hugo favorably compares with recent Best Picture nominees winning in this category. Those previous winners were all strong contenders for the award in their own right. And I'd have to do specific research, but I'm also thinking that none of them lost the VES award.

Sorry, I read that as I posted it and thought, "that doesn't sound right." So if Hugo doesn't win visual effects, it will be the first Best Picture nominee since 1970 to lose out in Best Visual Effects. That's why I'm thinking it has a strong chance here.

No, that was the latest - the earliest was in the first year that visual effects had a category of its own - 1939.

So, the earliest is back in 1970?

I have a hard time thinking of any visual effects in Mrs. Miniver.
The climactic bombing of the village, the earlier battle of Dunkirk.

They all have equal screen time and equal importance to the events that unfold during the film. Sareh Bayat is my 2nd place on my best actress lead behind Nadezhda Markina for Elena (great film, terrible title).
I can see a case being made for Bayat as a lead, but I don't think Shahab Hosseini nor Leila Hatami really have the screentime to contend as lead actors.

The answer is yes, but not since 1970 when Patton lost to Tora!Tora!Tora.

The others:

Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz to The Rains Came in 1939.

Rebecca; Foreign Correspondent and The Long Voyage Home to TheThief of Bagdad in 1940.

Mrs. Miniver and The Pride of the Yankees to Reap the Wild Wind in 1942.

Since You Went Away and Wilson to Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo in 1944.

Spellbound to Wonder Man in 1945.

Just had an interesting thought, if anyone is interested in the technical categories: has a movie that has been nominated for Best Picture ever lost Best Visual Effects? Except when it wasn't up against another Best Picture nominee, like Avatar over District 9, Return of the King over Master and Commander, Babe over Apollo 13. I can't think of any, so might Hugo have this one if only because it's the most like movie of the bunch?
