I thought it might be interesting to take a look at some of the names of people that are being pushed for nominations in their respective categories for Make-Up and Visual Effects, since we know that they're assured:
Albert Nobbs: Matthew W. Mungle, Lynn Johnston & Martial Corneville
Anonymous: Bjorn Rehbein & Heike Merker
The Artist: Julie Hewett & Cydney Cornell
Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life: David Marti, Montse Ribise & Gill Robilliard
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: Nick Dudman & Amanda Knight
Hugo: Jan Archibald, Ann Buchanan & Morag Ross
The Iron Lady: Marese Langan & J. Roy Helland
Captain America: The First Avenger: Christopher Townsend, Edson Williams, Charlie Noble & Paul Corbould
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: Tim Burke, John Richardson, Greg Butler & David Vickery
Hugo: Rob Legato, Craig Barron, Matthew Gratzner & Joss Williams
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol: John Knoll, Russell Earl, & Mike Meinardus
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: Charles Gibson, Ben Snow, Gary Brozenich & Mark Hawker
Real Steel: Erik Nash, John Rosengrant, Matthew Gratzner & Joe Digaetano
Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Joe Letteri, Dan Lemmon, R. Christopher White & Daniel Barrett
Transformers: Dark of the Moon: Scott Farrar, Scott Benza, Matthew Butler & John Frazier
The Tree of Life: Douglas Trumball, Dan Glass & Bryan Hirota
X-Men: First Class: John Dykstra, Nicolas Aithadi, Jay Barton & Chris Corbould
Usually, prestige names can carry over into nominations, especially in the Make-Up categories. That being said, I think Gainsbourg has a VERY good chance of getting a nomination for two reasons: one, it is a "spans the course of movie", in that it spans the course of a many decades and as such, there is a lot of aging make-up. Plus, Mati & Ribise were both winners five years ago for Pan's Labyrinth, so they may still have some clout. The other two nominees will probably be The Artist and Harry Potter.
The movies assured visual effects nominations are Harry Potter, Hugo and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Now, Douglas Trumball is going to be receiving an honorary Gordon E. Sawyer award for his contribution to the visual effects field. Might the branch also decide that a nomination would go well with his award also? Or maybe the film's detractors might have too much say. Either way, don't rule it out. Ditto Transformers, who has an equal, if not more, number of detractors. Still, the visual effects branch has a strong "more equals better" mentality, so that might help it to get another nomination. Pirates of the Caribbean was considered all but out until it snagged the all too recognizable nomination from the VES Society. However, their previous helmer, John Knoll, wasn't on board for this one (his name is actually over under Mission: Impossible 4's list), so that may detract a bit.
So, from my observance of nepotism and preference of these two branches, my predictions are as follows:
Make-Up
- The Artist
- Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
With The Iron Lady potentially upsetting Harry Potter
Visual Effects
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
- Hugo
- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon
With The Tree of Life potentially upsetting Pirates.
