Re: 2010-2011 Emmy Awards

Post by Mister Tee »

My very few thoughts about a show I half-watched (the Oscars I watch; the Emmys I "have on"):

It was pretty clear early on they didn't like Mildred Pierce much, but, given the competition, it would almost have been a personal insult to Kate Winslet had she not won.

They managed to pick the supporting actor from Modern Family I find consistently least funny.

I've never seen Friday Night Lights, and I know people who will be delighted with Chandler's win. But I'm beginning to think Jon Hamm is just going to slip into history never winning for his iconic character (the one time he's won anything -- a Globe -- it was the year they weren't televised so no one got to give a speech).

But then Mad Men came back and won series for the fourth year running, despite no other on-air prizes. This is why I never make an attempt to predict the Emmys. They are capriciousness defined.

Came in late on the show, so missed the opening number. Lynch seemed pleasant enough, but it's a thankless job.

Ah, censorship...

Alec Baldwin's Emmy bit nixed on Fox after '30 Rock' star's joke about News Corp. hacking scandal
BY Lukas I. Alpert
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Sunday, September 18th 2011, 5:36 PM

Alec Baldwin wasn't laughing when Fox cut his pre-taped crack poking fun at boss Rupert Murdoch from Sunday night's Emmy Awards.

The "30 Rock" star, 53, told the network to just pull the plug on the whole thing, sources said.

"They edited out a line and he asked them to not air the segment," a Baldwin pal confirmed to the News. "He didn't want to do something that had been edited afterwards because if it's comedy and you take out a key line it just doesn't work."

The crack poked fun at Fox's parent company News Corp.'s phone-hacking scandal.

In the bit, Baldwin is seen talking on the phone and then stops the conversation and calls out Murdoch by name, saying he can hear him listening in.

Baldwin tweeted that he thought News Corp. was being a bit too sensitive.

"Fox did kill my NewsCorp hacking joke. Which sucks bc I think it would have made them look better. A little," he wrote.

Baldwin's rep declined to comment.

After Baldwin backed out, Fox re-taped the bit with "Star Trek" legend Leonard Nimoy, a source said.

I'm fine with Gwyneth Paltrow winning for Glee. Her episode is one of the best highlights in an otherwise subpar season but I was rooting for Dot Marie Jones to win. She's the best thing about Glee last season.

It's pathetic that there are even awards for most of these categories. Jeez, just show up and do your job, and just be thankful you have a job. I mean, an award for make up on Saturday Night Live. Why not an award for my super for vacuuming the hallways?

I believe it's a record in the COMEDY category. In the Drama category, Hill Street Blues swept the Supporting Actor in a Drama one year with 5 of its supporting actors getting all 5 slots.

I had not noticed the exclusions of Sedgwick or NPH. Those are actually quite shocking. I'm disappointed that Sherlock didn't nominated for miniseries and that The Kennedys did (has there been a more poorly reviewed nominee in these categories?)

True Blood didn't figure as I thought it might and Modern Family's four nominations in Supporting Actor might be a record (anyone know?). FNL getting a drama series nomination now seems like a semi-hollow gesture from an Academy that ignored it for so long. But they did the same thing to Star Trek: The Next Generation back in '94, so it has precedent.

Surprised there wasn't more love for the cast of Downton Abbey, especially the male side.

As always, there's some good and some bad. But the bad is just dull, so I can't get that worked up.

I wish Community got a nomination. Although its second season wasn't as assured with an endearing central arc as its first season, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, and Donald Glover are brilliant comedic presences who deserve nominations. And to suggest that there is one stronger supporting character let alone six than Nick Offerman's singular Ron Swanson is absurd. He especially had a field year. I also wish they found room for Adam Scott. But Parks and Rec got a Comedy Series nomination, and is easily my choice of the nominees. As is Amy Poehler whose pas de deux with Adam Scott brought out new shades in a character who initially just came across as an Michael Scott clone. She was terrific this year and is part of a more compelling season cliffhanger than I would have thought.

I'm thrilled to see Louis C.K. nominated for Best Actor in a Comedic Series, and he would be my choice as well. I'm rooting for him. I guess Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen are the best bets for Supporting Actor and Actress.

There have been a lot of articles written about how movie directors have been moving to tv as of late, and the proof is in the pudding here: Martin Scorsese, Neil Jordan, Curtis Hanson, Todd Haynes, Olivier Assayas, Shari Springer Berman/Robert Pulcini and Patty Jenkins all received major Directing nominations.

Most surprising omissions were Toni Collette, last year's winner Kyra Sedgwick, and Neil Patrick Harris, right?

I suspect many people will be very happy about the long-awaited Drama Series nod for Friday Night Lights.

Glee was pretty bad this past season, so I guess the fact that it was dropped from a bunch of categories is the silver lining to its still totally undeserved Comedy Series nod.

I've worked with Margo Martindale, so I was personally thrilled for her nomination. What a lovely, generous woman, a real actor's actor who loves her craft with so little concern for the fame or recognition it might (though usually doesn't) bring her. I ran into her at the end of last year and she was so excited to have just booked this Justified role; it's great to see such a hard-working character actress recognized in this major way.

EDIT: Oh, and one more thing! How much do we think Bridesmaids has to do with Melissa McCarthy's nomination here?

Emmy nominations are out.

A few thoughts:

- Very happy they dropped Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison. They did nothing to warrant nominations this year.

- Very pissed they nominated Jon Cryer...again and at the expense of a dozen or so worthier candidates.

- Very happy they nominated Peter Dinklage and Game of Thrones. Easily one of my favorite shows on TV.

Fair enough. Didn't know that.

Well, we'll find out in a couple of days.

I don't really do hope-dictions much anymore, and I don't watch much television. But Nick Offerman's performance as Ron Swanson is the most consistently funny presence in television for me, and I'm hoping he (like the film) sneaks in.

A number of the kids won Emmy nods years ago for The Cosby Show.
Including Keshia Knight Pulliam who was only 6.

The last time the Emmys nominated a minor is back in 2001, Frankie Muniz for Lead Actor in a Comedy and Hannah-Taylor Gordon for Lead Actress in a Miniseries/Movie.
