Isn't that still highly speculative?
Then we can put him in the "gay vague" category!

According to the movie, the character doesn´t seem gay. Perhaps it was gay in her real life. Same case with Russell Crowe in A Bautiful Mind.
Oops! I couldn´t read Penelope´s post which expresses the same.

Second category should probably be referred to as "gay vague."

Iris Murdoch was openly bisexual, but it's only mentioned in the movie, not shown.

The others on your "on-the-fence" list should definitely be on here though.
Some people have read his relationship with "Ratso" as being a "gay" one but, yeah, I haven't seen it in a while so I guess you're right.

And Iris?

Also on the second list you should include Van Heflin in Johnny Eager.

And what about Cate Blanchet for the Aviator? Is the jury still out?

Was it intentional, the exclusion of the two who played transsexuals (John Lithgow, The World According to Garp and Felicity Huffman, Transamerica)?

And on the second list you can include Clifton Webb for Laura, George Snders for All about Eve, Hope Emerson for Caged, Sal Mineo for Rebel without a Cause, Grason Hall for The Night of the Iguana, Estelle Parsons for Rachel, Rachel and probably others too.

With the seemingly inevitable nomination of Sean Penn for Milk, I thought it'd be a good idea to list down the LGBT performances that Oscar has honored throughout the years. (I think we did this at one point but I forgot).

*won

Estelle Parsons, Rachel, Rachel
Peter Finch, Sunday Bloody Sunday
Al Pacino, Dog Day Afternoon
Chris Sarandon, Dog Day Afternoon
Robert Preston, Victor/Victoria
John Lithgow, The World According to Garp
William Hurt, Kiss of the Spider Woman*
Bruce Davison, Longtime Companion
Tommy Lee Jones, JFK
Jaye Davidson, The Crying Game
Tom Hanks, Philadelphia*
Greg Kinnear, As Good As It Gets
Ian McKellen, Gods and Monsters
Hilary Swank, Boys Don't Cry
Catherine Keener, Being John Malkovich
Javier Bardem, Before Night Falls
Salma Hayek, Frida
Ed Harris, The Hours
Charlize Theron, Monster*
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Capote*
Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain
Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal

I don't know whether or not to include:
Jon Voight, Midnight Cowboy
Whoopi Goldberg, The Color Purple
Margaret Avery, The Color Purple
Stephen Rea, The Crying Game
Chloe Sevigny, Boys Don't Cry
Geoffrey Rush, Quills
Judi Dench, Iris
Kate Winslet, Iris
Nicole Kidman, The Hours*
Julianne Moore, The Hours

Anyone I missed?
