Prick Up Your Ears 8/10

I loved Gary Oldman's performance. Oldman showed such promise in this and in 'Sid and Nancy', that the rest of his career was a bit of a let-down. Vanessa Redgrave was also great in a role that was nothing important on paper, but she manages to give it importance and weight. As for Alfred Molina, i agree with flipp when he says it was a disgusting and desperate performance. Even though i realise that he did a brilliant job in such a demanding role, it failed to connect with me (which i suppose is good for me). Overall an underrated film with excellent perfomances.

I just saw the video comment from Ebert and Siskel from back then. Siskel was full of praises about Oldman and particularly about Molina and he said that they both deserved the Oscar in that year. Ebert was particularly impressed by Oldman and he said that he felt he was witnessing an actor like Olivier or Richard Burton in the making.

A pity that the film went un-noticed at the oscars, but it is understandable considering its subject matter and the academy voting of that period. By the way, what happened to Oldman's once promising career?

Vanessa Redgrave's performance in Prick Up Your Ears is fabulous. Alfred Molina is just vile beyond words. A disgusting and desperate performance. I suppose that was the character, though.

Well, no...Brooke Bundy plays the key "Mother" role in Elm Street 3, though Nan Martin appears in another key Mother role in the film, but neither are Oscar nominees.

For me, Elm Street 2 was the absolute Nadir of the series. Even the corny Freedy's Dead and the cheapo Elm Street 5 are more inventive and interesting.

FWIW, my rankings are:

1. Elm Street
2. New Nightmare
3. Elm Street 3
4. Elm Street 4
5. Freddy's Dead
6. Elm Street 5
7. Elm Street 2

Not even into the gay subtext, eh?

The "2" out of ten was for the barely-clad Robert Rusler and that's about it. Even the gay subtext wasn't saving this one for me. Although, I did enjoy the tradition continued from the original of having a former Best Supporting Actress nominee play a mother role (Ronee Blakely in the first; Hope Lange in the second). Does that trend continue?

Death to the Cult of Neutered Hipsters, Pt. II (following 'Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist')
Really wanted to go higher on this one because the premise is so clearly there and the aesthetic is wonderful. What a fucking Written-by-a-Guy Movie this is?! Of merit but too obnoxiously indicative of everything I hate about the hipsters generation in all its bullshit soundtrack and all-but-virginal andocentric worldview. This is the kind of movie that Jesse and Celine would ridicule.
