a) Well, All of Us Strangers lives to fight another day. Now if only Fox Searchlight would let me see it. That's the other reason why I'm doubting it

b) re: Score, I have no memory of the Killers of the Flower Moon music at all, so it's performance this season has been staggering to me. There's a lot of good work in music this year so I hope we see something else nominated. Sabin, don't forget Elemental here. The sound/music is pretty strong and the music branch is still pretty cliquey.

c) Tee, I would've rated Portman ahead of Barrino to be honest, but yeah, I also don't think it matters much - those six you cite are ahead of the rest.

d) I wasn't predicting Dafoe until I saw Poor Things, actually, but he's quite good in it and there's a sympathetic streak under it that actually convinced me he was getting a nomination.

Re: BAFTA Long Lists

Post by Mister Tee »

My too-long-lingering ague makes me fear I'll miss something here, but some thoughts:

Given the oversized lists, what counts most is borderline inclusions and unexpected exclusions.

Of the first, All of Us Strangers is obviously the lead story. Many of us had thought it could make such a showing here, so it can't be labeled a shocker, but the lack of one would have probably been near-fatal to its hopes. So, good for the film and all participants.

Saltburn showing up so often is certainly not-bad news, though the best film exclusion in that context comes as last-minute gut punch. I think the film is just too divisive to do really well at AMPAS, but it's nice it's not been entirely buried in the rush.

Otherwise, all potential best picture placers are here except for American Fiction, May December, and -- if it's still even worth mentioning -- The Color Purple. The first could be the latest case of BAFTA Not-So-Black, the second more Haynes-aversion (though this was the one spot where Carol made the best picture ballot), and The Color Purple could be American Fiction plus film-is-just-not-good.

We also might just acknowledge that this year's been too damn good, and there aren't enough slots for all those that deserve nominations, even in a list of ten. Let alone the other categories, where five will be the limit.

I don't see anyone important missing from the best actor slate. The Oscar five should come from this list, and BAFTA's cull might give us an inkling of who's weakest/strongest.

The lead actress long-list does omit a name in many people's mix -- Natalie Portman -- but, honestly, I haven't thought of her as more than long-shot. I've been thinking Gladstone/Stone/Mulligan/Huller/Lee/Robbie were the chief contenders, though I suppose Bening is still a possibility (which would be along the lines of Judi Dench getting in at SAG for Victoria and Abdul over better candidates). Or Barrino, if you want to keep believing.

Supporting actor leaving out Melton is the first serious blow his candidacy has received all season. Dafoe is also hurt, but I'd been thinking of him as fading hopeful already. Conversely, Sessa gets a big boost. Everyone else in contention seems present and accounted for.

Supporting actress, the potentially most complicated category for nomination, has the most noteworthy omissions. Many of the flying solo candidates are missing: Cruz in Ferrari, McAdams in Margaret, Davis in Air. Pretty much all three of them need to show up at SAG to have any real hope. (Some would say Davis is already fully out of it, and they may be right -- but it's worth noting Davis is a three-time winner for film at SAG, and could show up out of nowhere.) The rest of the slate is fully Oscar-friendly, from the heretofore-ignored Foy to the surprisingly strong Ferrera.

Every screenplay I've thought might have an Oscar chance is here and ready for combat.

I don't have the energy to comb through the lower categories. Though I do note that Godzilla MInus One is absent from visual effects. I'm wondering if BAFTA and the Broadcasters are both going to go with Oppenheimer for that category, making the Oscar match-up a very rare precursor-less one.

You all know that I’ve been incessantly beating the drum on All of Us Strangers since November so I was very pleased by its showing today. I predicted that all four actors would be longlisted.

Also psyched about the love for Saltburn which is hitting the zeitgeist right now and is on everyone’s lips.

Interesting to see that Cara Jade Myers made the longlist for Killers of The Flower Moon. I highlighted her in my review here of my pre-release screening of the film.

I think All of Us Strangers is probably the big winner. Not one day after I said it might not have a great showing at BAFTA it shows up for ten.

Saltburn also had a good showing with 11. I'm not sure Saltburn is entirely out of it. It's certainly a divisive film but only the people who vote for it matter.

As for other categories:

Their tendency to line up with Best Original Score is a bit hit or miss. Last year, they didn't long list The Fabelmans. In 2021, they missed Encanto and Parallel Mothers. Of their shortlist this year, only Napoleon and Wonka missed the eligibility cutoff. They also didn't cite The Boy and the Heron or The Zone of Interest. I would guess (for the Academy's five), it's Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer with Barbie, Poor Things, Saltburn, and Across the Spider-Verse fighting it out for the final three spots. It's odd, I have almost no memory of the Barbie OST (is it just that poppy uptempo music? I thought it was a riff on other songs in the film), no memory of Saltburn (I'll revisit), and Poor Things' crazy off-tempo riffs seem unusual for Academy mention. Maybe Across the Spider-Verse is in a good position. It's at least a more classical choice by their standards.

I've been trying to suss out Best Film Editing for a while now. Their track record is they went 4/5 in 2021 (missing King Richard) and 2022 (missing Tár). This year, their biggest omission seems to be The Holdovers, which isn't that surprising; it's a bit of a shambling thing. Anatomy of a Fall showing up is a good sign. It's a brilliantly edited film (its LAFCA win was well-deserved).

May December was shut out of all but two categories. Saltburn got into several, but wasn't a finalist for Best Picture. American Fiction also missed Best Picture.

The voting process for the BAFTAs is unique.

In the acting categories, the top seven performances voted on by the full acting membership in Round 1 in December make the long acting lists with the top three guaranteed a nomination. A committee then selects three others to extend each of the lists to ten. In Round 2, a committee selects 3 of the 7 that are not guaranteed a nomination to come up with the six nominations in each of those categories.

The rules are different in other categories. All is explained here:

Rachel Mcadams keeps showing in critics list but I don’t know if she was eligible here.
She must be since Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret made the Adapted Screenplay shortlist.

Major surprises seem to be the omissions of Willem Dafoe and Charles Melton.

Rachel Mcadams keeps showing in critics list but I don’t know if she was eligible here.
