I'm guessing that Gaga "wasn't going to perform" until the producers agreed to give her a lot of freedom to do the performance however she wanted.

Some lame moments (two dreadful songs; hated JLC’s speech) but so far I’m liking the show. It feels the most like an Oscars in a few years. It’s cohesive. There’s good lively energy. Jimmy Kimmel is generally doing a good job. Good set. But best is that it really does feel like it’s about the movies. That’s really all I ask for. The nominated films have been persona non grata the last few years. Not this year. Generally into it.
