I'm back among the living here. Happy to see McDonagh delivering, though it feels like in a somewhat minor key.

Not totally done yet with Venice, and of course there's Toronto to come. But I'd say the notion that this year would be the return of big bold cinema, after multiple pandemic-limited slates, has had substantial cold water thrown on it this past week. TAR and Women Talking have had by far the most enthusiastic responses (and even they come with "this film may not be for everyone" asterisks), with this film running third. The belly-flops of White Noise and Bardo have removed a lot of the potential excitement from this year's landscape (though I'm definitely interested enough to watch both of them).
