Best Cinematography 1947

3 nominees in each of the categories was a bit paltry.
Black-and-White
Certainly, Great Expectations, Green Dolphin Street and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir represented the cream of the crop, but there were other films worthy of consideration including Beauty and the Beast, Nightmare Alley, Odd Man Out, Out of the Past, The Bishop's Wife and Boomerang!. Still, they were wise to give it to Guy Green, who along with Jack Cardiff and Freddie Young founded the British Society of Cinematographers. He would eventually direct more films (25) than he photographed (21) in his 91 years but he reached his pinnacle with Great Expectations.
Color
Has there ever been a studio film photographed against the backdrop of a matte canvas that looked more real than Black Narcissus? Not that I've seen. If Jack Cardiff could win only one competitive Oscar, then this should be the one, and it was.
Life with Father and Mother Wore Tights were acceptable also-rans, but they could have easily expanded to five nominees with Captain from Castile and Good News.
